Sepino is an Italian municipality with 1833 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Campobasso in Molise and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Places in Italy). The municipality is located about 13 kilometers south-southwest of Campobasso on the Tammaro and borders directly on the province of Benevento ( Campania ).

history

The Samnites founded the city of Saepinum here , which was conquered by the Romans in 293 BC. The city was abandoned at the beginning of the Middle Ages for unknown reasons and was only re-established later. The ancient Saepinum was the seat of a bishop. However, only the bishop Proculeiano is known , who was present at a Roman synod around 500. The titular bishopric of Sepino has existed since 2009 .

The Strada Statale 87 Sannitica leads through the municipality from Benevento to Termoli . Sepino train station is on the Benevento – Campobasso railway line .
