Venafro is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 11,209 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Isernia in the Molise region .

geography

The municipality borders directly on the provinces of Caserta and Frosinone . Venafro is located 20 kilometers southwest of Isernia in the Volturno valley .

The districts include Ceppagna, Le Noci and Vallecupa.

The neighboring municipalities are Capriati a Volturno ( CE ), Ciorlano (CE), Conca Casale , Mignano Monte Lungo (CE), Pozzilli , San Pietro Infine (CE), San Vittore del Lazio ( FR ) and Sesto Campano .

history

Today's Venafro goes back to the ancient Samnite settlement Venafrum , of which, among other things, the remains of an amphitheater have been preserved, which held 3,500 seats and is about 60 meters in diameter.

Until 1852 Venafro was the seat of the bishopric of the diocese of the same name , which became part of the diocese of Isernia-Venafro .
