Castelpetroso is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 1620 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Isernia in Molise . The municipality is located about 10.5 kilometers east-southeast of Isernia .

Santuario della Madonna Addolorata in Castelpetroso

At Castelpetroso (Cesa tra Santi) is the pilgrimage church Santuario dell'Addolorata di Castelpetroso . The foundation stone was laid on September 28, 1890, but it was not consecrated and opened until September 21, 1975 by the Archbishop of Campobasso.

On December 6, 1973, Pope Paul VI proclaimed Maria Santissima Addolorata di Castelpetroso the patron saint of the region of Molise . Pope John Paul II visited the pilgrimage church on March 19, 1995, and Pope Francis on July 5, 2014 .
