geography

Location of the municipality in the province of Isernia

The terrain around Belmonte is very mountainous and rocky. It is difficult to trace the founding of the village, which is why Belmonte did not appear in the history books until the middle of the 16th century, when Baron Santobuono and his family withdrew to the hidden place for fear of looters. He built his Palazzo baronale on the highest point of the place. The palazzo still towers over the Piazza Risorgimento in the center of the village. It has 39 rooms and a 12 meter long hall for various occasions.

Districts

Belmonte is divided into several fractions (districts):

  • Castellana-Baroni
  • Santa Maria la Noce
  • Padule Piane, Carcamo
  • Serra Carpini
  • Colle S. Angelo
  • Portelle, Selvotta
  • Pine di Nibbio
  • Difesa
  • Difesa Cordari.

With all these suburbs, Belmonte has a population of 862.

Attractions

The village also has a number of attractions to offer. The two churches of S. Salvatore and S. Rocco, a memorial plaque for the fallen of the Second World War, an observation tower of the Lombards and a monument to St. Padre Pio and an ancient limestone grave of the warrior Pakis Uviis should be mentioned .

The area around Belmonte is one of the most truffle-rich regions in southern Italy. In the summer months, the place is a meeting point for many truffle tourists from all over the world, who also appreciate the idyllic tranquility and the Italian hospitality of the place.
