San Pietro Avellana is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the province of Isernia in the Molise region in the Apennines with 451 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The municipality is located about 21.5 kilometers north-northwest of Isernia am Sangro and borders the province of L'Aquila ( Abruzzo ).

history

The present village was founded in the 10th century by the Benedictine monk Dominikus von Sora .

The Strada Statale 652 di Fondo Valle Sangro leads through the municipality from Cerro al Volturno to Fossacesia . The San Pietro Avellana-Capracotta train station is on the Sulmona- Isernia railway line .
