The Sangro is a river in Italy about 122 km long. It flows through the provinces of L'Aquila and Chieti, which are part of the Abruzzo region, and a little through the province of Isernia in Molise .
geography
The Sangro rises in the Apennines at an altitude of about 1600 m in the mountain area of Monte Morrone del Diavolo, which is part of the Abruzzo National Park . It flows first to the southeast. While it is still inside the national park, it is dammed up to the Lago de Barrea located between Villetta Barrea and Barrea . Then the Sangro turns its course to the northeast and flows through Castel di Sangro , Ateleta , Quadri and Villa Santa Maria . In Bomba he is also the Lago di Sangro called Lago di Bomba dammed. A few kilometers to the north it takes on its largest tributary, the Aventino , which joins from the left . At Torino di Sangro the Sangro flows into the Adriatic Sea .
Regulation of the river
The Sangro has an average water flow of approx. 9.2 m³ / s. During the summer its volume is greatly reduced (0.5–3.2 m³ / s.), While in autumn and winter there is often a considerable increase (maximum capacity at Ateleta: 16.2 m³ / s) due to heavy rainfall. In autumn, the river often causes major flooding due to heavy rainfall. Therefore, attempts are made to entice the river into the outer dykes in order to protect the towns and the country from flooding.
