Castel di Sangro is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 6707 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo . The municipality is located about 88 kilometers southeast of L'Aquila and borders directly on the province of Isernia .

history

The place is identical to the ancient Samnite city Aufidena , which was conquered by the Romans in 209 BC. Even in the Middle Ages, the place played an important role as a strategically important place on the way through Abruzzo. It was owned by the Count di Sangro . In 1228 the fortress was razed. In 1456 and 1656 earthquakes almost completely destroyed the place.

Sports

The relatively successful ASD Castel di Sangro (Serie B) club plays in the Teofilo Patini stadium . The inline speed skating European championships were held here for the 1997 marathon discipline. From June 2nd to 9th, 2019 the ISF World School Tennis Championships were held here.

The Fondovalle Sangro expressway, Strada statale 652 di Fondo Valle Sangro , which connects the regions of Molise and Abruzzo, runs through the village . In addition, the Strada Statale 17 dell'Appennino Abruzzese e Appulo Sannitica leads from L'Aquila through the municipality towards Foggia .

The Ferrovia Sangritana runs from Marina San Vito to Castel di Sangro. The train station in Castel di Sangro is also served by trains on the route from Sulmona to Isernia .
