Fontecchio is an Italian commune ( comune ) in the Abruzzo region and the province of L'Aquila and has 310 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The municipality is located about 22 kilometers southeast of L'Aquila am Aterno and in the Sirente-Velino Regional Park and belongs to the Comunità montana Sirentina

history

From Roman antiquity there is evidence of a ruin of a temple to Jupiter, on the foundation of which today's church of Santa Maria del Vittoria was built. In 1703 and 2009 the community was damaged by violent earthquakes.

traffic

The former Strada Statale 261 Subequana (now a regional road) leads through the municipality from L'Aquila to Molina Aterno . There is a train station on the Terni to Sulmona railway line .
