Avezzano is an Italian municipality with 42,276 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo . It is the capital of the Marsica region and the seat of the diocese of Avezzano .

The neighboring municipalities are Capistrello , Celano , Luco dei Marsi , Massa d'Albe , Ovindoli , Scurcola Marsicana and Trasacco . The city includes the districts (fractions) Antrosano, Borgo Incile, Castelnuovo, Cese, Nucleo di Pietraquaria, Paterno, San Giuseppe di Caruscino, San Pelino, Strada 10 e 40 del Fucino and Borgo Via Nuova.

On January 13, 1915, Avezzano was completely destroyed by a severe earthquake . Over 32,000 people were killed.
