The Autostrada A25 ( Italian for 'Motorway A25'), also called Autostrada dei Parchi , is a motorway in central Italy . It leads from Torano to Chieti and is 114 km long.

The A25 is the continuation of the A24 motorway from which it branches off. That is why it doesn’t start at KM 0, but at KM 72. It connects Rome with Pescara on the Adriatic coast . It crosses the Abruzzo Apennines .

The motorway starts at Torano, where it branches off from the A24 that leads to Teramo . It runs eastwards past Avezzano , where it runs through the Piana del Fucino basin , where Lake Fucino used to be . At Celano the motorway reaches more mountainous terrain again. Between Pescina and Cocullo there is also the longest tunnel on the route, the San Domenico with a length of 4,567 m.

The motorway then turns north and passes the towns of Sulmona and Popoli . In its last section, the A25 follows the Pescara river to Chieti near the port city of Pescara . Here it ends at the A14 , which runs from Bologna via Pescara to Taranto .

history

The motorway was built in several sections. The first section between Torano and Avezzano was opened on September 14, 1969. In 1970 the section between Pescara and Manoppello took place. On July 28, 1973, the section between the SS 5 and Manopello was opened to traffic. The line between Scafa and the SS 5 followed on January 1, 1975. Further sections were opened in 1976 (Torre dei Passi-Bussi and Avezzano-Celano) and 1977 (Bussi - Torre dei Passeri).

On May 6, 1978 the line between Celano and Cocullo was opened. The last section was opened on August 7, 1978 between Cocullo and Popoli. The entire length of the motorway has been open since then.

Toll and administration

The entire length of the motorway is subject to tolls . It is managed by the Italian motorway company Strada dei Parchi SPA

State of development

The A25 has four lanes (2 lanes in each direction) along the entire route.

Although the motorway runs through the mountainous area of ​​the Apennines , the A25 has few tunnels . The longest of the route is the San Domenico with a length of 4,567 m. The motorway has a total of 6 tunnels. The total length of the tunnel run is 6,645 m (towards Pescara) and 6,599 m (towards Torano).

There are also some bridges on the motorway . The longest is the Gole di Popoli with a length of 1.9 km in both directions.
