Torano , also called Torano di Carrara , is a small town that belongs to the city of Carrara and the province of Massa-Carrara in Tuscany , Italy.

description

The place is about 2.5 kilometers from Carrara and is north of the main town on a foothill of the Monte Sagro mountain . Tornano is 150 m and has about 680 inhabitants. The inhabitants are called Toranesi . The town's patron saint is Assunzione di Maria , the feast day is August 15th. From the place itself there is a fascinating view of the mountains of the Apuan Alps . The place probably originated in pre-Roman times and gets its name from the Latin (bos taurus) or Italian word (toro) for the male domestic cattle (bull), which is also depicted in the ancient coat of arms of the place. At that time the bulls were used to remove the marble. The place was first mentioned in writing in 1141. There are numerous sculptures made of Carrara marble in the Torano cemetery . The church of Santa Maria Assunta was built at the end of the 16th century as Santa Maria degli abbandonati and was named a parish church on May 8, 1599 . The church was given its current name at the beginning of the 19th century. Another church in town is the Oratorio dei Santi Quattro Coronati .

A large quarry area of Carrara, the Bacino di Torano, is named after this place. There are around 30 active quarries in which the Statuario (white and yellowish sculptural material), Statuario Venato (gray and white sculptural material), Calacatta, Cremo, Ordinario and Arabescato are quarried.

In the Torano valley basin is the Polvaccio quarry, from which Michelangelo extracted some of his stone blocks and which is now known as Cava-Michelangelo.
