The Autostrada A17 ( Italian for 'Autobahn A17') was an Italian motorway that ran from Naples to Bari . It crossed the Italian boot from west to east and thus connected the Tyrrhenian with the Adriatic Sea.
The A17 ran from Naples eastwards via Avellino and Grottaminarda to Canosa . Here it changed its course southwards and ended at Bari. The A17 was opened on December 11, 1969.
When the A14 between Lanciano (south of Pescara ) and Canosa was opened in 1973, a continuous connection between Bologna and Bari was created. The section of the A17 from Canosa to Bari became part of the A14. The rest of the route (Naples-Canosa) has been classified as the A16 ( Autostrade dei due Mari ). This number was previously held by today's southern branch of the A12 between Rome and Civitavecchia .
The number A17 has not been assigned again since then, as it is also considered an unlucky number in Italy.
