  • The Autostrada A16 ( Italian for 'Motorway A16'), also called Autostrada dei Due Mari (Italian for 'Motorway of the Two Seas'), is an Italian motorway that runs from Naples to Canosa . It has a length of 172 km and is subject to tolls along its entire course . It is managed and operated by the Italian motorway company Autostrade per l'Italia .

    history

Its original number was the A17 , which it lost when the A14 to Bari was completed and it was given the number 16 between the A14 and Naples, which until then had occupied the motorway between Rome and Civitavecchia (now the A12 ).

The construction of a motorway from Naples to the Adriatic coast was extremely complex. The greatest obstacle was the planning and construction of the Apennines , which had to be overcome. The opening of the motorway dates back to 1969.

    course

The motorway mostly consists of two lanes for each direction of travel, which also have a hard shoulder. Its origin is east of Naples. On its way from west to east, in the Campania region it cuts the Irpinia territory and crosses the A30 motorway near Nola . At Avellino there is a connection to Salerno , 20 km further east there is a connection to Benevento .

Due to the nature of the terrain, the eastern part of the motorway is often exposed to strong winds, which can be a hindrance, especially for heavy vehicles. A third lane has also been created on the uphill stretches, which should enable slow, heavy trucks to overtake more easily. In the winter months (November to April) it is necessary to carry snow chains between Baiano and Candela . In this section of the Apennines there is often sudden and profuse snowfall. If the snowfall is too heavy, there is a compulsory exit at the Baiano junction for traffic from Naples. Between Grottaminarda and Vallata is 671 m above sea level. NN the highest point of the A16.

At the Candela junction there is also a crossbar between the A16 and the city of Foggia , which is also used as a shortcut to the A14 in the direction of Pescara / Bologna .

North of Canosa di Puglia , the A16 ends at a motorway triangle with the A14 Bologna - Taranto .
