Cerignola is a town with 58,450 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Foggia , Apulia region in Italy.
geography
Cerignola is about 40 kilometers southeast of Foggia . In addition, the city occupies an area of 593.71 km², which makes the city the third largest municipality in Italy after Rome and Ravenna.
The neighboring towns of Cerignola are Ascoli Satriano , Canosa di Puglia (BT), Carapelle , Lavello (PZ), Manfredonia , Ordona , Orta Nova , San Ferdinando di Puglia (BT), Stornara , Stornarella , Trinitapoli (BT) and Zapponeta .
Cerignola is the agricultural center of the Apulia region. The city is also the namesake for the Rosso di Cerignola wine-growing region , which is located in the surrounding area.
history
Cerignola was founded by the Normans and from 1418 onwards it was fiefdom of the Caracciolo family for several centuries . On April 28, 1503 the Spaniards defeated the French at Cerignola. As a consequence, the Kingdom of Naples became Spanish.
The father of former New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia was from Cerignola.
