Nicola Zingarelli

Nicola Zingarelli [niˈkɔːla dziŋɡaˈrɛlli] (born August 31, 1860 in Cerignola , † June 6, 1935 in Milan ) was an Italian philologist, lexicographer and Romanist.

life and work

Zingarelli studied at the University of Naples (Laurea in lettere 1882), in Breslau and Berlin and was a high school teacher in Palermo , Campobasso , Ferrara and Naples until 1906 . From 1906 to 1916 he was professor of Romance literary history at the University of Palermo , from 1916 to 1932 for Romance philology at the University of Milan , and from 1932 for Italian literature there. Zingarelli worked on the Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani and published the Rassegna critica della letteratura italiana . In addition to a comprehensive work on Dante, he published studies on the Cid , Provencal trobadors , and the Orlando furioso . He was a member of the Accademia della Crusca (since 1923) and the Accademia dell'Arcadia (from 1925 Accademia letteraria italiana).

Zingarelli is best known for his Vocabolario della Lingua Italiana ( Lo Zingarelli ), which he began in 1912, published in fascicles from 1917 and in a volume in 1922 (Milan, 1724 pages), with further editions in 1924, 1928 and 1935, which he oversees. and which has been published by Zanichelli since 1941. It has been updated annually since 1993 (e.g. 2010 as Lo Zingarelli 2011 , Bologna 2010, 2720 pages).
