Bovino is an Italian commune with 3138 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Foggia , in the Apulia region and is a member of the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The most beautiful places in Italy). It is located not far to the right of the Cervaro on an eastern foothill of the Neapolitan Apennines with an extensive view.

The neighboring towns are Accadia , Castelluccio dei Sauri , Deliceto , Orsara di Puglia and Panni .

history

In Roman antiquity, Bovino was called Vibinum . During the Second Punic War , Hannibal defeated it here in 217 BC. His camp for some time. There are remains of walls, towers, numerous inscriptions, an aqueduct and some cisterns . Since the 10th century Bovino was the seat of a diocese ; its cathedral was the church of Santa Maria Assunta . In the Polish War of Succession , the Spaniards were defeated here by the Austrians in 1734. In 1456 and 1851 the city was badly hit by earthquakes .

Bovino has 1,574 private households . Between 1991 and 2001 the population fell from 4,546 to 3991. This corresponds to a percentage decrease of 12.2%.
