The province of Foggia (Italian Provincia di Foggia ) is the largest of the five Italian provinces of the Apulia region . The capital is Foggia . Rivers, mountains and the sea form their natural boundaries. Cultivation areas shape the landscape. Rolling hills delimit the fertile Tavoliere that extends around Foggia. Historical settlements from the Daunian , Roman and medieval times can often be found. The rugged Gargano coast is by far the most beautiful bathing coast in the entire Italian Adriatic. The heart of the province, which was formerly called Capitanata or Daunia, is the Tavoliere, an endless lowland with a gently sloping hinterland. Mainly wheat and maize are grown on the fertile soil. From the great fascist reclamation campaign - the legendary " wheat battle " - the tavoliere emerged as pure arable land; since then pasture farming has played a subordinate role.
In 2004 three municipalities of the province were split off and added to the new province of Barletta-Andria-Trani . The province of Foggia has 616,310 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in 61 municipalities on an area of 7,175 km².
