Cagnano Varano is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 6,994 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Foggia in Apulia .

Geography and population

Cagnano Varano is located about 44.5 kilometers northeast of Foggia in the Gargano on Lake Varano within the Parco Nazionale del Gargano . At the same time, the community belongs to the Comunità Montana del Gargano .

history

The ancient Greek foundation Uria (YPIATΩN), which could have been founded in the third century BC, was located near the community . Cagnano Varano itself did not come into being until the High Middle Ages.

Strada Statale 89 Garganica leads through the municipality towards Peschici . There is a train station on the railway line from San Severo to Peschici .
