The Ferrovie del Gargano (FdG) are an Italian private railway company in Apulia , whose standard-gauge trunk line connects the city of Peschici with the San Severo station on the main Bari – Pescara line. Passenger traffic on the Foggia - Lucera route has also been carried out by the FG since 2009. In addition, the FG are operators of some regional and national bus routes. On the Foggia – Manfredonia railway line, FdG provides services on behalf of Trenitalia.

history

Route of the FdG near Rodi Garganico

The main route from Foggia leads directly to Bari, which means that the Gargano , a landscape on the “spur of the boot”, has no rail connection. The first projects for a branch line to Gargano already existed at the end of the 19th century. At that time a branch line was to be built from San Severo to Manfredonia or Barletta . In the following years, a wide variety of routes were discussed, but none of the variants was approved. The First World War prevented further efforts to build a railway. Since the financial situation of the Italian state in the 1920s did not mean that construction would be carried out at state costs in the foreseeable future, a private company applied for the concession for a steam-powered narrow-gauge railway from San Severo to Menaio with a gauge of 950 mm in 1925. This was not approved either.

Only the license application from the Società Anonima per le Ferrovie e Tramvie del Mezzogiorno (FTM) based in San Severo to build a railway from San Severo to Peschici a year later was successful. The granting of the concession was tied to various conditions. The terminus had to be relocated to its current location, and standard gauge and electrification with 3000 V direct current were prescribed.

The railway construction began in 1930. The work progressed rapidly so that the railway could already be put into operation a year before the planned completion date. The inaugural train on October 27th was still pulled by a steam locomotive, on November 15th, 1931 the electrical systems were completed and regular operations could be started with electric traction.

Development since 2014

In December 2014, the first section of a generous route relocation for better development of Apricena was opened. With the opening of the new 3.15 km long Monte Tratturale tunnel between Apricena and San Nicandro in June 2016, all trains will run on the new route.

The promising section in the area of the high-altitude crossing station Apricena Superiore is therefore no longer served. The station building, which was increasingly dilapidated in the 1980s, has been restored in an exemplary manner in recent years. The FdG is examining the possibility of tourist museum traffic over the old mountain route.

For the development of the stretch of the route located directly by the sea, new stopping points have been opened: Guardiola and Baia S. Barbara , which is located directly on the sandy beach. Also Rodi Porto , for better development of the village and the Murge Nere stop on demand .

The Ferrovie del Gargano has concentrated in recent years on improving the connection between the localities. However, the total travel time between San Severo and Peschici has hardly changed in the past 50 years and is around 1:50 hours. In the summer of 1973 the Diretto 9 covered the entire distance in just 1:39 hours.

The deposit is in San Severo.

Vehicle fleet

The FdG are characterized by a diverse fleet of locomotives.

Former locomotives

E106 (built in 1957) on November 6, 2002 in Vico del Gargano - San Menaio

In 1930 and 1931 four B'B 'locomotives of the type L.80 were put into service. They were built by the Officine Meccaniche Reggiane (OMR) . Their top speed was 80 km / h. At the end of the 1970s it was decided to fundamentally modernize the locomotives and equip them with new car bodies. The reconstructed locomotives were put into operation between 1980 and 1983. After a total of almost 60 years of use, they were retired at the end of the 1990s.

In 1934 an electric railcar was put into service, which is still available as a historic railcar . It was in use until the early 1980s until the series ALe 80 railcars were delivered.

Starting in 1995, seven railcars of the Ferrovia Centrale Umbra were bought for the upcoming replacement of the locomotive hauled trains . These railcars were built in 1957 and have been modernized for use by the FdG. After the delivery of the new multiple units, these units were parked or converted.

Rental vehicles

FS ALn 772 in 1973, as it was used on loan from the FdG.

Before the modernization of the L.80 locomotives, there were frequent breakdowns and shortages of locomotives in the 1970s. In particular, railcars of the type ALn 772 of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane were used . The train driver was provided by the FS, as train driver and Beimann was an employee of the FdG in the driver's cab.

Current locomotives

ETR 330-103 in Foggia

In 1981 six new railcars of the ALe 80 series were put into service and ended the days of FS lending of the ALn 772 series. With the new railcars, direct connections from Foggia could also be offered. Until then, the trains only ran on the route from San Severo to Peschici. The ALe 80 are currently still held as reserve units.

In 2006 and 2007, the converted ALe 200 series multiple units were put into service. In 2008, the new ETR 330 multiple units ( Stadler Flirt ) went into operation.

The current FdG fleet (as of 2019) includes 7 ETR 330 multiple units and 9 additional electric multiple units of the ALe 80, ALe 200 and ETR 120 series.

Diesel locomotives and railway service vehicles

In 2003 the FG procured a diesel locomotive that was built by Krupp in 1962 and had the number V 100 1270 for the DB and from 1968 the number 211 070. After being taken out of service, the locomotive came to the ÖBB via a dealer (Layritz, Penzberg) , where it was refurbished and re-engineered as 2048 020 . After being taken out of service by the ÖBB in 2003, the locomotive was sent to FdG via Vossloh rail vehicle technology after further processing, where it was taken over into the inventory under the number V.100 and is used for rail service tasks.

The railway service vehicles include a motor trolley from the DB series Klv 12 and a small car that was converted from a Klv 51 of the DB .

Historic railcar

The FdG have the E.52 as a historic electric multiple unit in their inventory. It was built in 1934 by Officine Ferroviarie Meridionali (OFM) with a Bo'Bo 'wheel arrangement and is stored in the San Severo depot.
