The number in 2048 was a diesel locomotive of the ÖBB .

history

At the beginning of the 1990s, the ÖBB acquired decommissioned class 211 locomotives of the Deutsche Bundesbahn and had the machines adapted to Austrian requirements. The acquisition of used locomotives was supposed to bridge the short-term lack of suitable diesel locomotives in this performance class; the acquisition of new vehicles was viewed as uneconomical. Between 2001 and 2003 the locomotives were replaced by the 2070 series . The locomotives were very popular with the staff compared to the ÖBB 2070 series.

construction

The locomotive frame, which consists of T-steel profiles, is reinforced in the middle and supports the driver's cab (was modernized in the ÖBB main workshop in St. Pölten ), to which two stems of different lengths connect. The engine system , gearbox , cooling system, silencer and all other technical equipment are housed in the two stems . The driver's cab allows a good view in all directions. The frame, which is manufactured in a welded tubular construction, is supported at four points by means of two helical spring packages and oil-lubricated sliding plates on both bogies . The locomotives were painted in the standard ÖBB design. The roof, the glasses and the bogie area are painted umbra gray, the frame ivory and the two stems and the driver's cab painted traffic red.

technical features

A 3512 Caterpillar engine transfers the tractive and braking forces to the bogies by means of pivot pins. The transmission allows both shunting and route services. The locomotives have a direct and indirect acting air brake and have Sifa and Indusi .

Conversions

The basic structure of the vehicle (frame, bogies and superstructures) could be retained. Changes mainly affected the drive system and the steam heating.

The original Maybach pre-chamber diesel engine was replaced by a Caterpillar diesel engine. This is a supercharged 12-cylinder V-engine with charge air cooling that works as a direct injection. As with the DB 211, the power was set to 809 kW at 1500 rpm. The engine monitoring continued with the original photo measuring contacts.

Since the steam heating of the 211 was no longer required, the boiler was removed and replaced with a ballast weight in order to maintain the load distribution of the locomotive.

The brake system, the air generation system and the power transmission received no modifications.

Stakes and whereabouts

In the absence of an energy supply for the passenger trains, the locomotives were mainly used in freight and construction train service as well as in shunting. 2048 017 was the last locomotive to move into Ebensee station on the Salzkammergut Railway until autumn 2003 .

The last three locomotives that retired from service on October 1, 2003 (2048.005, 017 and 026) were passed on to an ÖBB subsidiary - they were used in light shunting and construction train service until the end. The others were sold, for example to the Layritz company in Penzberg or abroad.

2048.008 was sold to Vossloh and converted into an OnRail DH 1004 . She is currently driving for Westerwaldbahn GmbH .

Five more locomotives were bought by Salzburg AG and given a general overhaul in St. Pölten . The locomotives are used under the designations V83 to V87.

The Steiermarkbahn acquired 2048,024 and called them that again. The locomotive was given a new paint job in green with red elements. In the meantime, the state railways have acquired another former V 100 with the former Am 847 961-0 (formerly DB 211 124) and designated it as 2048.035, although it was never a 2048 with the ÖBB.

The GKB (Graz-Köflacher Bahn- und Busbetrieb) still uses two former DB V100s (V211.182 and V211.170) as the DH 1100 series in freight transport and shunting.
