The Salzburg AG for energy, transport and telecommunications is an energy - and infrastructure provider with headquarters in the state capital Salzburg in Austria and supplies throughout the province of Salzburg and adjoining Upper Austria currently has about 433,000 electricity customers plants.

Salzburg AG emerged from two companies, infrastructure providers for the city and the state of Salzburg.

The energy supply company for the city of Salzburg was founded in 1887 as the municipal electricity company. In 1950 these were merged with the municipal transport company of Salzburg, founded in 1940, to form the new company Salzburger Stadtwerke . At that time, they operated the business fields of traffic , electricity , gas and water supply and in the same year built the first district heating system in the state for the Salzburg state hospitals. In 1997 the Salzburger Stadtwerke entered the Internet as a provider - and in 1998 into the telecommunications business .

The Salzburger AG für Energiewirtschaft  (SAFE) was founded in 1920 as a state electricity supply company, and until 1980 mainly operated the power supply for the state. In 1980 the natural gas and cable TV business areas were added; In 1989 the company set up a district heating network in the city of Hallein . In 1996 SAFE offered telecommunications services for the first time and in 1997 also entered the Internet business as a provider.

In 1999, the first merger talks between the municipal utilities and the competitor SAFE began. On September 15, 2000, the merger of the two service providers with Salzburg AG resulted in a new company in the energy industry, which has since been a leader in the state of Salzburg.

In the following 15 years, the company invested more than 2 billion euros, making it one of the engines of the regional economy. Investments of 150 million euros are planned for 2016.

Ownership

The ownership structure is divided between the State of Salzburg (42.56%), the City of Salzburg (31.31%) and Energie AG Oberösterreich Service- und Beteiligungsverwaltungs-GmbH (26.13%).

Energy and water

Today, the company supplies the entire state of Salzburg with around 13,700 GWh of electricity , 11,110 GWh of natural gas , 930 GWh of district heating and the city of Salzburg as a water supplier with 11.6 million m ^{3 of} drinking and industrial water (as of December 2016). In Salzburg, Salzburg AG operates the fossil-fired district heating plants AG FHW Mitte Salzburg , FHW Nord Salzburg , HW  Elsbethen in the Rainerkaserne (HW  Salzburg Süd closed in 2007) and that of the Salzburg State Hospital . More than 200,000 t of  CO _{2 are} emitted each year. In December 2011, the third largest district heating storage facility in Europe was put into operation at the northern heating power station. It is 45 m high and has a useful volume of 30,000 m ^{3 of} hot water. It also operates the heating plants in Hallein , Wals-Siezenheim (integrated into the district heating network of Salzburg City since 2007) and several smaller heating plants in isolated operation (Bruck, Bramberg, Radstadt, Saalfelden, Abtenau, Altenmarkt, Wald, Fusch) , some of which are biomass power plants.

In public transport , Salzburg AG took over from its predecessor companies, the railway line Salzburg Lamprechtshausen , the railway Bürmoos-Ostermiething , the funicular to the fortress , the trolleybus Salzburg (ten lines), the 1890 opened Mönchsbergaufzug and municipal bus services . This makes it the largest operator of local public transport in the state capital. All of Salzburg AG's means of transport are integrated into the Salzburger Verkehrsverbund  (SVV). With the routes to Lamprechtshausen (S1) and Bürmoos (S11), Salzburg AG also operates two of five lines of the Salzburg S-Bahn .

The rail traffic of Salzburg AG has been marketed under the traditional name Salzburger Lokalbahn  ( SLB ) since it was founded in 2000 . The trolleybus and bus traffic, however, occurs under the marketing name Obus Salzburg .

As part of a restructuring of the urban bus traffic in Salzburg, Salzburg AG took over 49 percent of the private bus company Albus Salzburg Verkehrsbetrieb in 2005 . In return, the last two Salzburg AG bus routes, routes 15 and 27, including all the buses that were in existence at the time, were handed over to Albus in order to be able to exploit potential synergies . Since then, Salzburg AG has been one of the few transport companies in the world to operate trolleybuses but not buses.

In March 2006, Salzburg AG also took over the operation of the Schafbergbahn and Wolfgangsee shipping from the Austrian Federal Railways  (ÖBB) and incorporated them into the newly founded Salzkammergutbahn GmbH . In July 2008, Salzburg AG also took over the operation of the narrow-gauge Pinzgauer local railway acquired by the State of Salzburg ; it was originally also part of the ÖBB.

Since 2009, Salzburg AG and Länderbahn have been part of a consortium called Berchtesgadener Land Bahn  (BLB), which has been operating the S 4 S-Bahn line on the Freilassing – Berchtesgaden line, which is located entirely in Germany, since December 2009 . This cooperation is the result of a 2006 invitation to tender, from which the bidding consortium emerged as the winner.

Finally, the Salzburg AG took over in mid-June 2010 at the Salzburg Open Air Museum in Großgmain operation of there newly created Museum Feldbahn Großgmain . In 2016, Salzburg AG carried a total of 50.5 million passengers in its means of transport.

In 2012 the brand names changed again, the transport division operated under the uniform umbrella brand Salzburger Lokalbahnen from this point on , the trolleybus was henceforth called TrolleybusSLB . In the spring of 2016, however, this concept was changed again and all areas (Salzburger Lokalbahn (S1, S11), Pinzgauer Lokalbahn, trolleybus, Wolfgangseeschifffahrt / Schafbergbahn) have always been listed under their own name with the addition of Salzburg AG .

On December 12, 2014, the 2.8 km extension of the local railway line from Trimmelkam to Ostermiething, which has a catchment area of ​​15,000 inhabitants, was opened. As a rule, an S11 railcar commutes between Bürmoos and Ostermiething, and the trains to Salzburg are connected during rush hour. The travel time from Ostermiething to Salzburg Lokalbahnhof is 60 minutes with a change in Bürmoos, and 45 minutes with the express trains without changing trains.

Freight transport

In addition to the freight traffic on its main routes to Lamprechtshausen and Trimmelkam as well as on the connecting route between Salzburg Hauptbahnhof and Salzburg Itzling , Salzburg AG has also been responsible for operating the Stieglbahn , a connecting railway in the city area named after the Stiegl brewery , from the start . The basis for this is a lease agreement from the times of the Salzburg Railway and Tramway Company (SETG). The company has also been operating the Hallein towing railway since May 2, 2002 .

Soon after it was founded, the company began to expand outside of its regular routes in the Salzburg region. As a result of the liberalization of rail transport, the company's freight trains also run on the network of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and the German DB Netz AG . They also come to Buchs in Switzerland , Tarvis in Italy and Jesenice in Slovenia .
