The Stieglbahn , also known as the Stieglgleis or Stiegl- Schleppbahn , is a 3.4 kilometer long industrial mainline in the Salzburg districts of Lehen and Maxglan .
As planned, the railway line is operated exclusively for freight traffic , but has also been approved for passenger traffic since 1988 . The standard-gauge , non-electrified and continuously single-track railway branches off the Rosenheim – Salzburg railway line 1.9 kilometers west of Salzburg's main train station at the Salzburg Aiglhof stop and connects to the Stiegl brewery in Salzburg that gives it its name. In addition, nine other industrial companies located on the route are served by various siding .
The Stieglbahn was opened on February 16, 1920. Initially, the infrastructure belonged to the brewery itself; the then Salzburg Railway and Tramway Company (SETG) was commissioned to manage the operations on a lease basis . After its dissolution, the successor company Städtische Verkehrsbetriebe Salzburg took over the operation in 1948 , which in turn became part of the Salzburg public utilities in 1950 and in 2000 in Salzburg AG . The Stieglbahn continues to use them to this day, although the infrastructure has been in the possession of the Anschlussbahnen AG, which was founded specifically for this purpose, since January 1st, 1977 .
