The Salzburg Railway and Tramway Company , abbreviated to SETG , is a former Austrian railway company from Salzburg .

history

The transport company was founded in 1885 by Alexander Werner, the director of the Linz Tramway Company , and the civil engineer Franz Kreuter as the Salzburg Localbahn - SLB for short . The concession for the first route, the railway line from Salzburg to St. Leonhard-Drachenloch , issued the authorities on 21 April 1885. After this local railway went into operation in 1886, the company opened a year later, the initially as horse course operated streetcar Salzburg . On March 27, 1888, the company was converted into a stock corporation and was called the Salzburg Railway and Tramway Company. In 1892 the company set up the Festungsbahn , a funicular to the Hohensalzburg . The last stretch was the Salzburg – Lamprechtshausen railway , which opened in 1896 .

From 1907 to cooperate with the Royal Bavarian State Railways , SETG-trains ran on the subsequent railway Berchtesgaden slope Enderstein through to the German Berchtesgaden , in return Bavarian trains came to Salzburg. The staff was also deployed across borders. The electric tram in Salzburg, which opened in 1909, was also operated by SETG, but unlike the horse-drawn tram that was closed in 1908, this was done on behalf of the city administration.

From February 16, 1919, SETG also took over the management of the Stieglbahn , a connecting railway in the Salzburg city area, which was newly opened on that day . They were operated on a lease basis on behalf of the Stiegl brewery in Salzburg . In the inter-war period, bus traffic in Salzburg was operated with a total of 14 lines by the subsidiary Albus , whose line XII led to the Gaisberg .

In 1940, when the Salzburg tram was shut down, the Salzburg trolleybus was opened as a municipal company . The city founded the municipal transport company Salzburg for trolleybus traffic .

On January 1, 1947, the city of Salzburg took over the company assets of SETG, the shares previously listed in Vienna were redeemed at their nominal value. On June 15, 1948, the concessions were finally transferred to the city and extended until 2020. On October 1, 1948, the company expired and was completely absorbed by the Salzburg municipal transport company. Today's successor company is Salzburg AG .
