The ET41–58 , built from 1983 onwards, are standard gauge electric multiple units for use on the Salzburg local railway lines electrified with 1000 volts DC voltage , which are now integrated into the Salzburg S-Bahn network. These are the S1 Salzburg – Lamprechtshausen and the S11 Bürmoos – Ostermiething . The vehicles were procured as replacements for railcars 22-24 and 31-33 and are based on the somewhat older U3 railcars of the Frankfurt U-Bahn .

construction

Mechanical part

The car body is designed as a self-supporting steel structure which is supported on the two motor bogies at the vehicle ends and on Jakobs bogies . The drive motor is built into the bogies as a longitudinal motor, the power is transmitted via angular gears ( tandem drive ). The primary suspension was implemented using Megi springs; coil springs in conjunction with hydraulic shock absorbers are used between the bogie and the car body.

Electrical part

The traction motors are designed as four-pole, compensated full-voltage series motors with a nominal output of 300 kW. Each motor is driven by its own thyristor - chopper (chopper) driven. By using DC choppers, it is possible to feed braking energy back into the contact line . If the braking energy cannot be absorbed, it is converted into heat by braking resistors. The built-in multiple control enables the coupling of up to four vehicles in regular operation.

Modifications

In the course of their use, the railcars were subjected to several modifications:

Customer information system
The first three series were equipped with brooches to indicate the destination . After delivery of the fourth series, which is already with LCD - matrix displays was stocked, the remaining railcars were retrofitted accordingly.
Low-floor middle section
Cars 50–58 were expanded to include a low-floor middle section in 2012–2014. The renovation was carried out at the Czech company INEKON Group. In addition, the seats and floor coverings in the end cars were swapped and the folding doors were replaced with sliding and sliding doors from IFE. The ET55–58 railcars were excluded from the door conversion, as they were already delivered with pivoting sliding doors.
Doors
As a follow-up project to the low-floor center sections, the folding doors on the railcars that were not extended were also replaced by pivoting sliding doors.

It is criticized that the entire fleet of railcars was not equipped with air conditioning even in the course of the last modifications .

designation

Railcar ET55 with the name Land Salzburg

The wagons 41-58 were given names of the communities through which the two routes run, as well as some other place names from the region, including from neighboring Bavaria. The place names are also applied with the respective coat of arms on both sides of the car.
