history

The villa was built between 1638 and 1642 for the Edinburgh merchant John Rynd . This is possibly the oldest surviving building in Inveresk. There was probably a previous building at the same location, from which the vaulted cellar was integrated into the Halkerston Lodge. Before 1779 the building was known as the Midfield . In that year Helenus Halkerston acquired the property and named it after himself. In 1960 the Halkerston Lodge was restored. The executive architect was Walter Schomberg Scott .

description

The Halkerston Lodge is located on Inveresk Village Road in the center of the village not far from the east bank of the Esk . It may be connected to the adjacent Inveresk Lodge via a tunnel . The building has a square floor plan. The facades are plastered with sand-colored Harl . The northeast-facing front is constructed asymmetrically and designed with a gable which is worked as a stepped gable . The two-winged entrance door below was decorated with a grooved cornice in the course of the 19th century .

A flat extension with a sloping roof connects to the southeast side . The Halkerston Lodge closes with a pyramid roof , unusual for the year of construction , which is covered with gray slate. Various dormers protrude from the front and rear . Massive chimneys protrude from the southeast and northwest sides. Another flat chimney emerges from the top of the roof. Most of the interior no longer corresponds to the original condition.
