Inveresk Lodge

The Inveresk Lodge is a villa in the Scottish town of Inveresk in the Council Area East Lothian . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish Monuments List in the highest category A. The associated gardens are also listed in the Scottish Gardens and Parks Register.

history

The villa was built between 1683 and 1700. There are indications that fragments of the villa date from the earlier 17th or even 16th century. This estimate is based on the architectural design and has not yet been confirmed. Inveresk Lodge is one of the oldest preserved buildings in Inveresk. The villa saw numerous changes of ownership before Clan Wedderburn acquired it from Blackness Castle at the turn of the 19th century and held the building for around 110 years. During this period, the gardens were expanded. Inveresk Lodge then passed to the Elphinstone clan and finally to the Brunton family . Due to an illness, Helen Brunton could no longer adequately look after the house and garden and donated the property to the National Trust for Scotland in 1959 . He looked after the gardens and opened them to the public three years later.

description

The Inveresk Lodge is located on Inveresk Village Road in the center of the village, not far from the east bank of the Esk . To the northwest are the listed villas Halkerston Lodge and The Manor House . The two-story building has an L-shaped floor plan. The facades are plastered with Harl , with details set off with sandstone . A stair tower protrudes from the inside corner of the building, at the foot of which the two-winged entrance portal is inserted. The year of construction 1683 is recorded on its lintel . There are indications that another stair tower once cantilevered to the right. Several dormers protrude from the roofs covered with gray slate. The gable surfaces are worked as a stepped gable . At the garden facing southeast side one takes bow window with triple windows out. The former stables form the northeast flank. In the meantime they have been converted into living space.
