Freilassing [ fra͜iˈlasɪŋ ], until 1923 Salzburghofen , is a town in the Upper Bavarian district of Berchtesgadener Land . Together with Bad Reichenhall, it forms the joint regional center of Bad Reichenhall / Freilassing. After the opening of the Munich-Salzburg railway line with its large border and junction station, the place developed into a railway town and is now the economically strongest municipality in the district with close ties to the neighboring Austrian capital of Salzburg . Freilassing is part of the Rupertiwinkel cultural area and is located in the Salzburg-Freilassinger basin .

Community structure

In the city of Freilassing there are 18 parts of the municipality. In addition to the main town of Freilassing, these are the church village of Salzburghofen, the villages of Hofham, Saalbrück, Sailen and Unticheet, the hamlets of Brodhausen, Eham, Hagen, Klebing, Lohen, Obereichet, Schaiding and Stetten and the desert areas of Aumühle, Hub, Oedhof and Wassermauth.

history

In the 6th century the Bavarians took possession of the land on the Saalach and Salzach. In Salzburghofen, a ducal court of the Agilolfinger was soon established , which was closely related to the bishopric or the ducal palatinate of the city of Salzburg and which was donated to the Salzburg church at the beginning of the 10th century. The name of Freilassing is first mentioned in a note that was written between 1125 and 1147. There are two theses regarding the origin of the name. The name Freilassing probably comes from "free (non-taxable) pasture". According to another thesis, the name is related to the release of a servant or serf. Until 1923, the community bore the name of the current district of Salzburghofen. It had belonged to the state of Salzburg since the early Middle Ages , which, together with the Salzburggau and the mountain regions, belonged to the Duchy of Bavaria . With the rise of Salzburg to an independent prince-archbishopric in the period after 1328, Salzburghofen and Freilassing also broke away from Bavaria. In 1810, today's Freilassing, together with Salzburg, became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria and, like the rest of the Rupertiwinkel , remained Bavarian in 1816 when most of the Province of Salzburg came to Austria through the Treaty of Munich .

The community experienced an upswing with the construction of the railway and its location as a border and later also a hub station . As a result, the district of Freilassing became increasingly important, which was expressed in the name change: Salzburghofen became Freilassing in 1923. On April 25, 1945 Freilassing was badly hit by a bomb attack. After the Second World War , Freilassing recorded significant growth through displaced persons and refugees . In 1954 Freilassing was promoted to town . In June 2013 it was hit by a major flood; the level mark of the Saalach was in some cases considerably higher than the average of the century, and the Freimann district in particular was affected by the flood disaster.

From September 2015 to 2019, the BAMF operated a branch office in Freilassing for the registration of asylum seekers. On peak days, up to 2000 refugees from the Republic of Austria entered the Federal Republic of Germany via Freilassing.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018, the city grew from 13,569 to 16,939 by 3,370 inhabitants or 24.8%.

religion

Of the 15,799 inhabitants recorded in a census at the end of 2011, 8,346 were registered as Roman Catholic (a decrease of 16.4% compared to 1987) and 2,383 as Evangelical Lutheran (including free churches, an increase of 6.7% compared to 1987); thus almost 68 percent of the residents of Freilassing belong to a Christian religious community. The religious affiliation of the remaining 5050 inhabitants was not broken down in the state statistics. So far, in addition to "Roman Catholic" and "Evangelical Lutheran", only the number of "foreigners" is given in the statistics of the census - here with 3204 (an increase of 98.5% compared to 1987).

The two Roman Catholic parishes of St. Rupert and St. Korbinian form the parish association of Freilassing and belong to the Teisendorf deanery of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising , whose merger with the Berchtesgaden deanery to become the Berchtesgadener Land dean is planned.

The Evangelical Lutheran parish in Freilassing is part of the Diaspora and part of the Traunstein deanery in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria . In addition to the city , its parish area also includes Ainring , with its own parish center in Mitterfelden as well as Saaldorf-Surheim and Teisendorf .

coat of arms

Freilassing coat of arms
Blazon : "In red on green ground, a white horse jumping over a golden salt barrel."
Reasons for the coat of arms: The jumping horse "released" is seen as a popular symbol of freedom and the place name Freilassing is derived from "free pasture (not subject to tax)". The golden salt barrel refers to the former municipality name Salzburghofen (until 1923) as well as the great economic importance of the salt trade near the old salt route and the salt shipping on the Salzach for the municipality . In addition, the salt barrel, also known as the “disk”, is an attribute of St. Rupert , which in turn refers to the fact that the Rupertiwinkel belonged to the Archbishopric of Salzburg .

The coat of arms was awarded in 1936 by the Reich Governor in Bavaria.

Economy and Infrastructure

economic sectors

In 1998 Freilassing was named a business-friendly municipality by the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Transport and Technology . "An excellent infrastructure, optimal transport connections - motorway, rail, airport - and a favorable geographical location" are regarded as ideal location factors. This results in synergy effects with the directly adjacent economic area of Salzburg , and the city is an "ideal starting point for Southeast Europe". In addition, the region u. a. with the nearby high alpine Berchtesgaden Alps a "high recreational value" awarded.

The Freilassing Economic Forum (WIFO), in which the city, trade, industry, craft, liberal professions, service providers, hotels and restaurants are represented, aims to further develop the business location.

The medium-sized industrial companies in the city include Robel (railway construction machines), Kiefel GmbH (mechanical engineering), FRIMO Freilassing GmbH (mechanical engineering), Heinze (plumbing wholesalers), Schnitzer Motorsport , Hawle (fittings), Wiberg (spices) and Max Aicher GmbH (construction).

The city has a total of 330,000 m² of commercial and industrial space, 53,000 m² of retail space, 1,900 commercial establishments (including 201 shops, 205 handicraft businesses, 80 restaurants, 49 industrial establishments).

On June 30, 2013 there were 7353 jobs subject to social security contributions in the city; 4,763 of the resident population were employed subject to social security contributions, d. that is, there were 2590 people who worked as “commuters” in the city.

traffic

Railway and local public transport

The Freilassing Station is the Bavarian railway junction directly to the border before Salzburg. In the main route from Munich to Salzburg which opens railway line from Mühldorf a. To the south, the route branches off via Bad Reichenhall to Berchtesgaden .

Two main lines lead from Munich to Freilassing, with the same route length (138 km). Long-distance traffic currently runs exclusively on the double-track electrified route Munich - Rosenheim - Traunstein - Freilassing. The route via Mühldorf is largely single-track and not electrified, but is to be expanded due to the more advantageous route in the course of the main line for Europe Paris - Munich - Pressburg / Budapest.

The traditional reputation of Freilassing as a railway and border town is changing. In the course of its rationalization, the Deutsche Bahn downsized the Freilassing station location (e.g. closure of the railway depot in 1994, successor use as the Lokwelt railway museum ), and when Austria joined the European Union , Freilassing gained new importance.

The section between Salzburg Central Station and Freilassing is the heart of the Salzburg S-Bahn : The railway line between Central Station and Saalachbrücke / Freilassing has been expanded and has been in continuous operation with three tracks since the end of 2017. This also required the construction of the Salzach Bridge. In 2009, the Mülln-Altstadt, Aiglhof and Taxham Europark stations were built in the Salzburg city area. The Liefering station was commissioned in December 2013. Since the completion of the missing three-track section between Saalachbrücke and Freilassing with the timetable change in December 2017, the S2 to Freilassing has also been connected. Since December 2009 the S-Bahn line S3 has been running every 30 minutes between Golling-Abtenau and Freilassing. This means that Freilassing will not only be connected to Salzburg Central Station, but also to other important destinations in Salzburg through the numerous inner-city stops. Every second S3 also runs via Freilassing to Bad Reichenhall. Talent local trains are mainly used on this line .

Since December 13, 2009 the newly founded private company BLB Berchtesgadener Land Bahn has been operating the S4 line every hour on the Freilassing - Berchtesgaden route. By overlaying the S3 there is an approximate 30-minute cycle between Freilassing and Bad Reichenhall. BLB runs 5 FLIRT trains on its line .

In addition to local public transport, Freilassing is also directly connected to the city of Salzburg's public bus network with line 24. This line goes to the old town of Salzburg ( Salzburger Verkehrsverbund ).

Airport (Salzburg)

The city of Freilassing is located in the main flight path of Salzburg Airport and is therefore particularly affected by aircraft noise, but it also benefits from its proximity to the airport. In 1996 there was a plane crash near Freilassing , in which all 10 occupants were killed.

Street

The federal highways 20 and 304 run right past the village . State road 2104, which ends in Waging am See, runs through the village. The Bad Reichenhall junction to the German Autobahn 8 (Luxembourg − Karlsruhe − Salzburg) is about ten kilometers away .

The Austrian West Autobahn (A1) is about five kilometers away (exit “Salzburg-Mitte / Freilassing”). The B 155 also connects the center of Freilassing directly with the city of Salzburg . You don't need an Austrian motorway vignette for this , which is why the road v. a. is very popular with German tourists who want to go to Salzburg.

Public facilities

In Freilassing, the land surveying office responsible for the district of Berchtesgadener Land as well as the economic development agency of the district have their seat, it is also the seat of the Euregio Salzburg - Berchtesgadener Land - Traunstein .

The Mittelzentrum Freilassing has a district hospital that is part of the Kliniken Südostbayern Clinic Association, which is supported by the districts of Berchtesgadener Land and Traunstein as a non-profit joint stock company .

A police station of the state police and one of the federal police ensure public safety .

education

There are six schools in Freilassing: a primary school, a middle school, a secondary school with a business school, two secondary schools with a technical college (one for female, one for male pupils) and a vocational school.

Culture and sights

Architectural monuments

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Rupert was consecrated to Rupert von Salzburg in 1926 and is one of the largest churches in the Berchtesgadener Land district . Other affiliated churches of the community are the old parish church of the Assumption (built from the 7th or 8th or 17th century) and the first time in 1477 mentioned church of St. Peter and St. Peter's Church in the village Salzburghofen.

After the establishment of a second parish in addition to St. Rupert had already taken shape for Freilassing-Süd in 1961 , a new parish center was inaugurated on July 23, 1972 after about two years of construction and became a parish with the St. Korbinian parish on January 1, 1976 raised.

Museums

On September 2, 2006, the Lokwelt Freilassing railway museum opened as a branch of the German Museum in the former round locomotive shed , which was renovated for this purpose.

The city museum in the old fire station on Lindenstrasse also contains a gallery for changing exhibitions.
