Bergheim is an Austrian municipality in the state of Salzburg with 5583 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The southern part of the municipality borders on the state capital Salzburg. The Plainberg with the pilgrimage site Maria Plain forms the boundary between the municipality and the city area and the demarcation between the city and the state of Salzburg.

geography

The municipality of Bergheim is located in the Flachgau district , right on the northern outskirts of Salzburg in the federal state of the same name, and is part of the judicial district of Oberndorf . On an area of around 15 km², around 5425 people with their main residence live in the eleven districts Bergheim, Fischach , Gaglham , Hagenau , Kemating , Lengfelden , Maria Plain , Muntigl , Radeck-Kasern , Siggerwiesen and Voggenberg .

Bergheim is located in the northern foothills of the Alps , bounded in the south by the city of Salzburg, in the west by the river Salzach , in the north by the municipality of Anthering and in the east by the municipalities of Elixhausen and Hallwang or Salzburg .

From a geological point of view, Bergheim consists of many small elevations and depressions that were created by the foothills of Ice Age glaciers and their rivers. Today's town center is slightly elevated ( 435  m above sea level ) and continues to rise to the Plainberg ( 562  m above sea level ). The Voggenberg forms the highest elevation with the Hochgitzen ( 674  m above sea level ).

Besides the river Salzach there are several smaller streams. The largest of these is the Fischach , an outflow from the Wallersee , which comes into the municipality via Elixhausen, flows through the districts of Lengfelden and Fischach and flows into the Salzach at Muntigl. In the district of Fischach a branch of the Fischach branches off, the Mühlbach . This flows back into the Fischach at Muntigl. Other streams are called Plainbach, Bruckbach, Frauenbach and Ehrenbach .

Community structure

The municipality includes the following five localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Bergheim (2931) including Fischbach, Hagenau and Maria Plain
  • Lengfelden (1478) including Auberg, Dexgitzen, Maria Sorg and Viehausen
  • Muntigl (462) including the Eichpoint, Siggerweise, Siglmühle and Überfuhr
  • Plain (334) including Gaglham, Plain-Kemating and Radeck
  • Voggenberg (378) including Breit, Hintergitzen, Kerath, Korb, Reit, Reitbach, Schwabgitzen and Winding

The community consists of the cadastral communities Bergheim I and Voggenberg.

history

The area of today's Bergheim has been settled since the end of the Paleolithic (10,000 BC), which is attested by a find on the Muntigler hill.

Further finds from the Neolithic (3rd century BC), a hilltop settlement on the Muntiglerberg and a mountain settlement on the Hochgitzen indicate uninterrupted settlement in the area. There were also indications of such settlements on the Plainberg and in Lengfelden.

In the 1st century BC The Celts settled the area. In the year 15 BC The Romans first occupied the area and a year later the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum became part of the Roman Empire. The two Roman manors that were excavated in Kerath and Kemating probably also date from this time. In 488 AD, the Roman garrison withdrew on the orders of King Odoacer.

The Bavarians began to settle in the Salzburg area around 650 . In 1896, near today's parish church, one of the largest burial grounds in Flachgau was found, dating back to that time.

The name Fischach appears around 700 and in 788 Bishop Arnos' list of properties mentions a church "Ad Fischaha" (zur Fischach), the location of which has not yet been clarified.

The name Bergheim almost certainly comes from this time, as the syllable -heim is a typical Bavarian name for new localities from this time. The first documentary mention goes back to the year 927, when Archbishop Adalbert handed over a church and estate to the deacon Reginold, the remains of which are believed to be under the current parish church. It is possible that the families resident at that time ( Itzlinger or Fischacher ) also owned a castle in addition to the estate, but there are no records of this.

In the 12th and 13th centuries, the lords of Bergheim held important positions around the archbishops, which also had an impact on the position of Bergheim: they had their own court, fishing rights as well as tithes and goods in the municipality.

When the Bergheimer and Radecker families died out at the end of the 14th century , the property was administered by the Archdiocese of Salzburg and the court was relocated to Radeck , where the Barons of Rehlingen had rebuilt the castle in 1670. Today only the former castle chapel, consecrated to St. John the Baptist , reminds of this .

During the French Wars (1792 to 1815), large parts of Bergheim were destroyed when the French army crossed the Salzach near Laufen and then advanced towards Salzburg. During this time, Bergheim changed hands several times. When the state of Salzburg passed from Bavaria to Austria in 1816 , Bergheim became a direct border town.

The project bypassing the town by means of a tunnel is currently in the planning phase and is intended to relieve the heavily trafficked town passage in the future.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality is: "In a golden shield a green three-mountain, on the central crest of which an eight-spoke red wagon wheel rests." The mountains represent the three highest elevations of Bergheim (Hochgitzen, Plainberg and Voggenberg). The wagon wheel refers to the former lords of Radeck .

Economy and media

The municipality is traditionally characterized by agriculture. Today it also plays an important role as a location for a number of commercial sectors. In the last 20 years or so, Bergheim experienced an economic boom due to its location on the outskirts of Salzburg. The trade center between Bergheim and Lengfelden is home to national and international companies. In the Lengfelden Siedlung - Kasern area, it was mainly companies in the fashion sector that settled. At the same time, tourism is also experiencing an upswing. Many guests of the Salzburg Festival take up quarters in Bergheim.

At the beginning of the 1960s, a large medium-wave transmitter with two transmission masts each 200 meters high was to be built in Bergheim. However, after the construction of the transmitter building had already started, this project was abandoned because it was feared that the antenna masts would endanger air traffic. Today there is a transmitter on the Hochgitzen for the Salzburger Radiofabrik 107.5 , a radio station that is one of the free radios.
