Elsbethen is a municipality in the Salzburger Land in the Salzburg-Umgebung district in Austria with 5470 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).
geography
The community is located immediately south of the urban area of the state capital Salzburg in Flachgau in the Salzburg region. In terms of infrastructure, parts of the municipality are closely connected to Salzburg.
The Schwarzenberg ( 1334 m ), the Gurlspitze ( 1158 m ) and the Mühlstein ( 1059 m ) are among the highest peaks in Elsbethen .

history
The Zigeunerloch, a wide half-cave ( Abri ) not far from the Salzach, contained important finds from the Mesolithic to the Latène period . In 930 Elsbethen was first mentioned as Campanuaua .
The Camp Marcus W. Orr , somewhat misleading as storage Glasbach called, was one of the United States Army decorated Austrian internment . It was not located in Glasenbach, but on the left bank (west) of the Salzach in the south of the city of Salzburg . In the course of denazification and re-education, members of National Socialist organizations and suspected war criminals were arrested at Camp Marcus W. Orr after the Second World War .

Culture and sights
- Goldenstein Castle , which today houses a private middle school that Romy Schneider also attended.
- Parish Church of St. Elisabeth
- The local museum "Zum Pulvermacher" gives an insight into the history of Elsbethen. Thousands of exhibits ranging from prehistoric times ( fossils ) to the present day can be viewed on three floors . The focus of the museum is on the former powder production , which was discontinued in 1918, on the history and natural history of Elsbethen as well as on the rural working world of earlier years. The museum also includes a so-called "Dorfstraße", which gives a historical overview of the former craft businesses in Elsbethen. So there one can Krämer , a watchmaker , a cutter , the powder maker , a ceramist , a bindery and an old classroom are considered.
- Natural monuments
The Glasenbachklamm is one of the most famous natural monuments in Elsbethen . It is a recreational area and popular hiking area for the residents of Elsbethen and Salzburg . The Glasenbach Gorge is known for its fossil finds such as the ichthyosaur , which is on display in the Haus der Natur . Another special feature are the 200 million year old rock formations exposed by the mountain stream, which lead back to the Jurassic Period of the Mesozoic. This means that the history of the formation of the Alps can be viewed in detail from the former seabed to today's mountains.
Other natural monuments and popular hiking destinations are the Trockene Klamm and the Archstein in the south of the municipality.
Natural monuments that are less known as such are the linden tree at the Pulvermacher-Gütl in Glasenbach, the acacia tree at the Saliterer-Gut, the Holzhäusl linden tree, the linden tree at the old fire station, the linden tree at the Reinberg-Gut, the giant maple on the Schwarzenbergalm in Gfalls as well the Stadlerkessel, also called Strudelloch.
Sports
The Elsbethen sports complex has a soccer field , three tennis courts , a beach volleyball court and an asphalt track for curling .
traffic
Elsbethen is on the Salzburg-Tyrolean Railway . There are two stops in the municipality: Elsbethen and Salzburg-Süd, which opened in 1993, in the Glasenbach district. Both are connected to Salzburg Central Station by the S3 line of the Salzburg S-Bahn every 30 minutes . Salzburg Süd is also served by regional trains and is also the final stop for Salzburg city bus routes 3, 7 and 8.
education
In Elsbethen there is a kindergarten , an elementary school , a private middle school of the Augustinians in Schloss Goldenstein , and the grammar school and upper secondary school of the Ursulines , actually already in Salzburg.
