Ceramist

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A ceramist is the term used to describe working people who use ceramic materials to manufacture materials or utensils, but also works of art . This includes the preparation of the material, the production of the shape and the treatment of the surface, for example by glazing or decorating.

Basics about the professional field

Today, working with ceramic materials as a profession can be divided into three main directions: industrial ceramics , so-called "utility ceramics " and ceramics as a field of art (ceramic art, modern ceramics) .

The established job title of ceramist refers on the one hand to purely manual professions, but on the other hand also to a field of fine arts .

Industrial ceramics

Industrial ceramics or technical ceramics refers to the development and production of materials and objects that are developed and produced in terms of properties and use for technical requirements (heat resistance, dielectric strength, insulation capacity, etc.).

The most important areas of industrial ceramics are ceramic components as insulators and ceramic capacitors in the electrical and electronics industry, as well as ceramic materials in dental technology .

Utility ceramics

Use ceramic comprises the preparation of materials and a use of ceramic (structural ceramics, ceramic sanitary ware , ceramic furnace ( Hafnerei ), ceramic panel ( dishes ) and the like). Mass production of industrial character predominates here, even if there are still workshops with manual production, for example of tableware in porcelain factories or through pottery , but also of stove tiles .

The most important areas today are on the one hand the production of surface cladding in the construction sector (ceramic tiles , plates, etc.), on the other hand the production of tableware and cookware made of porcelain or earthenware .

Ceramic art

The work as a ceramist is also a branch of the visual arts (= modern ceramics ), which aims to design unique pieces , vessels , sculptures and other ceramic objects as works of art . Ceramicists in this field are freelance artists and run their own atelier . However, there is strong resistance within artistic ceramics to be mentioned in the same breath as craft or industrial areas of ceramics.

education

Ceramics is on the one hand a teaching profession , on the other hand an artistic education at art colleges and comparable art schools .

Ceramics as a teaching profession

Ceramics as a teaching profession is available in many European countries with a training period of 3 - 4 years. In Austria, the teaching profession of ceramist was reorganized on July 1, 2009 and set up with the following focal points, each lasting 3 years:
