Municipal council and mayoral elections in Salzburg 2009
The Gemeindevertretungs- and mayoral elections in Salzburg in 2009 were in the country Salzburg on March 1, 2009 in cooperation with the state election in 2009 carried out. Of the 119 municipalities in Salzburg, the ÖVP ran in 118, the SPÖ in 116, the FPÖ in 98, the Greens in 28, the BZÖ in five and the KPÖ in one municipality.

Starting position
In the municipal council and mayoral elections in Salzburg in 2004 , the ÖVP emerged as the strongest party in the municipal council election with a gain of 2.5% and 43.1% of the total vote. The SPÖ was even able to gain 6.0% and reached second place with 37.9%. The FPÖ lost 8.2% and took third place with 8.5%, ahead of the Greens, who achieved 7.0% and gained only slightly with 0.4%. Other parties achieved 3.5% in the municipal council election. After the mayoral election, the ÖVP provided 91 mayors (−7), the SPÖ candidates won in 25 municipalities (+4), the FPÖ in one municipality (+1) and other parties in two municipalities (+2).
Suffrage
In the municipal council and mayoral elections, all those persons who are Austrian citizens or members of the European Union and who have reached the age of 16 on the reference date (March 1, 2009) are actively eligible to vote. Those eligible to vote must also have a place of residence in the respective municipality of the State of Salzburg and must not have been excluded from voting. An exclusion from the right to vote exists in the event of a final conviction by a domestic court for one or more deliberate criminal acts to a prison sentence of more than one year. The exclusion ends after six months, the start of the period begins after the execution of the sentence as soon as the imprisonment has been carried out or no longer applies. Another requirement for participation in the election is entry in the electoral roll. These were made available for public inspection in the municipal offices from January 19 to January 23, 2009. The right to stand for election in the municipal council and mayoral elections in 2009 is available to all those who are themselves entitled to vote and who have reached the age of 18. However, only Austrian citizens are admitted to the office of mayor.

The gap between the ÖVP and the SPÖ reached a maximum of 12.8% and twice the average since 1949 (6.3%).
