The municipal council and mayoral elections in Salzburg 2014 were held in the State of Salzburg on March 9, 2014. Of the 119 municipalities in Salzburg, the ÖVP and the SPÖ ran in 117 each, the FPÖ in 104, the Greens in 37 and the NEOS in four municipalities.

Starting position

In the municipal council and mayoral elections in Salzburg in 2009 , the ÖVP emerged as the strongest party in the municipal council election with a gain of 1.6 percent and 44.7 percent of the total vote. The SPÖ, however, lost 6.0 percent and only came to 31.9 percent. The FPÖ was able to gain 2.2 percent and took third place with 10.8 percent, ahead of the Greens, who achieved 6.9% and thus stagnated. Other parties achieved 5.7 percent in the municipal council election, with the BZÖ coming in at 1.2 percent. After the mayoral election, the ÖVP provided 93 mayors (+2), the SPÖ candidates won in 22 municipalities (−3) and other parties in four municipalities (+2), while the FPÖ lost its only mayor.

Suffrage

In the municipal council and mayoral elections, those persons who had reached the age of 16 on the day of the election, March 9, 2014, and were entered in the electoral roll of the respective municipality on the key date (December 19, 2013), were eligible to vote. In addition, they could not be excluded from voting. As in the state elections, Austrians abroad were not eligible to vote in the municipal elections. Anyone who relocated and re-registered within Salzburg between December 20, 2013 and March 9, 2014 was entitled to vote for the municipal council and mayor elections in their former home municipality, but not in their new home municipality. However, anyone who moved to Salzburg from another federal state during this time was not eligible to vote in the municipal elections. Conversely, people who relocated to another federal state between December 20, 2013 and March 9, 2014 could vote for the municipal council and the mayor of their former home municipality.

The right to stand for election in the municipal council and mayoral elections in 2009 is available to all those who are themselves entitled to vote and who have reached the age of 18. However, only Austrian citizens are admitted to the office of mayor.

Results of the ÖVP

The Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) achieved 42.8 percent in the municipal council elections, which is exactly its average value since 1949, and lost a total of 1.9 percent of its votes, with the losses being distributed very differently across the Salzburg districts. The ÖVP lost 8.4 percent in the city of Salzburg and had to accept its worst result so far. In the Tamsweg district , however, it gained 6.0 percent, with the ÖVP benefiting in particular from the election success in the district capital Tamsweg (+13.7 percent). The ÖVP suffered the second highest losses with -1.5 percent in the Salzburg-Umgebung district , followed by the Hallein district (-1.2 percent) and the St. Johann im Pongau district (-1.1 percent). In the Zell am See district , however, the ÖVP grew by 0.1 percent. Overall, the ÖVP was able to achieve a relative majority of votes in five out of six districts, with the absolute majority in the Tamsweg (54.1 percent), Hallein (53.3 percent) and Salzburg-Umgebung (51.0 percent) districts. It was followed by the districts of St. Johann (48.8 percent), Zell am See (40.9 percent) and Salzburg City (19.4 percent).

Overall, the ÖVP was able to gain in 51 municipalities, while it lost in 66 municipalities. The ÖVP was able to gain more than 10 percent in nine municipalities, with an increase of 17.2 percent in Krispl , 16.3 percent in Lend and 14.1 percent in Hintersee . In return, the ÖVP lost 10.0 or more percent in nine municipalities. The ÖVP lost 18.2 percent in Werfenweng , 17.5 percent in Göming and 16.9 percent in Ebenau . In addition, it posted above-average losses in Untertauern with 15.6 percent, in Weißpriach with 15.0 percent and in Saalbach-Hinterglemm with 12.7 percent. The ÖVP achieved the highest percentages in the communities of Göming with 82.5 percent, in Plainfeld with 75.2 percent and in Krispl with 74.1 percent. Furthermore, it achieved top results in Pfarrwerfen with 71.9 percent, in Bergheim with 71.3 percent and in St. Koloman with 70.0 percent.

Among the mayors, the ÖVP lost 3, but was able to gain 5 (Abtenau, Bramberg, Leogang, Ramingstein and Werfen) and thus even expand their dominance slightly to 96 (plus 4 close to the ÖVP).

Results of the SPÖ

The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) got 28.5 percent, 3.8 percent less than in 2009 and achieved the worst result since 1949, with losses in all districts. The SPÖ was able to defend first place in the city of Salzburg, where it also achieved the second-best district result with 33.0 percent. With 34.6 percent, the SPÖ only did better in the St. Johann district, with the SPÖ only achieving 32.6 percent due to high losses in the Zell am See district. Here the SPÖ had achieved its best result in 2009. In the Hallein district the SPÖ came to 26.0 percent, in the Tamsweg district to 24.7 percent and in the Salzburg-Umgebung district to 20.9 percent. The SPÖ recorded the greatest losses in the Tamsweg district (−6.4 percent). It was followed by the Zell am See district (-5.6 percent) and the Salzburg-Umgebung and Hallein districts with -3.3 percent each. In the city of Salzburg the SPÖ lost 2.8 percent, in the district of St. Johann im Pongau only 1.0 percent. Despite the heavy losses, the SPÖ was able to achieve its best result in the Zell am See district with 32.6 percent.

Overall, the SPÖ was able to gain in 26 municipalities, while it lost in 91 municipalities. The SPÖ was able to achieve a relative majority in 17 municipalities, with Schwarzach im Pongau achieving its best result with 73.9 percent. It was followed by Bürmoos with 63.2 percent, Bischofshofen with 60.1 percent, Mühlbach am Hochkönig with 56.3 percent and Lend with 51.4 percent. The SPÖ achieved its highest profits in Göming with an increase of 17.5 percent. It was followed by Bürmoos with 16.8 percent, Rauris with 14.2 percent, St. Margareten im Lungau with 13.2 percent and Bischofshofen with 11.6 percent. In contrast, the SPÖ recorded massive losses in Wald im Pinzgau and Fusch an der Glocknerstrasse , where they lost 26.2 and 21.0 percent of the votes, respectively. Furthermore, the SPÖ lost a lot of votes in Lend (-16.3 percent), Bad Gastein (-14.2 percent) and Ramingstein (-13.7 percent).

With a loss of 5 mayors, the SPÖ won 3 (Bischofshofen, Mühlbach / Hochkönig and Rauris) and has a total of 19.

Results of the NEOS

The NEOS only competed in Abtenau (4.0), Obertrum (6.0), Hallein (10.1) and the state capital (12.4). In this they even won a city council (6 votes ahead of the FPÖ!) And performed best in the strongholds of the ÖVP (Gneiss 18.4; Aigen 17.1; Riedenburg 15.4; Parsch 15.1).
