BW

Eugendorf is a municipality in the north of the state of Salzburg in Austria and has 7066 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

geography

Eugendorf is located in the Salzburg-Umgebung district around ten kilometers northeast of the state capital Salzburg . The community belongs to the judicial district of Thalgau .

The almost exactly 29 km² large community of Eugendorf is located at 560 m above sea level in the slightly hilly Salzburg Alpine foothills . The foothills of the 899 m high Heuberg are located in the southwest of the municipality , but there are no major elevations overall. The heavily built-up areas around the district of Eugenbach, the historic Eugendorf and the industrial area of Straß are located in the west of the municipality; most of the remaining municipal area is used for agricultural purposes. There are hardly any larger contiguous forest areas, only an approximately 1.5 km long forest area in the southeast forms the border to Plainfeld and Thalgau, and a forest section of roughly the same length is located in the northwest in the border area to Seekirchen am Wallersee.

The place is not on any major body of water. In the municipality there are around ten largely insignificant streams (the largest of which is the Eugenbach), which flow in different directions, but mainly drain into the Fischach - the outflow of the Wallersee . This completely forms the border to the municipality of Seekirchen am Wallersee. The easternmost waters flow directly into the Wallersee, which is only a few kilometers north of Eugendorf.

Community structure

The municipality includes the following 3 localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Eugendorf (6024)
  • Kalham (368)
  • Schwaighofen (674)

The community consists of the cadastral communities Eugendorf, Kirchberg, Neuhofen and Schwaighofen.

history

Eugendorf was first mentioned in a document in 736. Jupindorf , also Jubindorf, is given as the place name in the oldest documents , which goes back to an old settlement clan , whose head was a person named Juvino (Juppin) or Jubianus . The b was later replaced by g based on the place name Eugenbach . The Eugendorf form is first mentioned in 1326. The place name is therefore not related to the personal name Eugen .

Eugendorf is mentioned for the first time under Duke Hubert von Bayern, who ruled until 736 and gave nine Mansi ( Huben (Hufen)) in Jupindorf to the Church of Salzburg . The mention of nine Mansi (settlement families with servants) proves that the town of Straß and parts of Eugenbach were connected. In addition, a church was built in Eugendorf, which is considered the original church of this area. This was already mentioned in 788 in the Indiculus Arnonis .

In the course of time, various noble families settled in Eugendorf, especially in the High Middle Ages. These included the Kalhamers, among others. These were once a powerful service team of the Archbishop of Salzburg and had considerable manorial property. They were also assigned military tasks. As ministerials, they could in turn lend fiefs and thus build up a knightly following. A number of such knights were dependent on them: for example the Knutzinger, the Pabenschwandter and probably also the Mühlberger. In addition to the Kalham nobility, there were the Knights of Unzing.

In the period after 1100, the growing population had divided several counties into smaller districts. At that time the Eugendorf Court was likely to have originated; the Kalhamers also exercised jurisdiction in Eugendorf for over 200 years.

The importance of Eugendorf increased especially from the 18th century. The first associations were founded in 1848. Compulsory schooling was introduced in 1803 by Bavaria. In 1803 there was the municipal administration and in 1805 there was the first municipality head with two councilors at his side. In 1874/75 Eugendorf received its own post office.

The population increased sharply as a result. In 1855 Eugendorf had 1,329 inhabitants, today there are over 6,200. The opening of the Salzburg – Mondsee section of the Salzkammergut local railway (also known as the Ischlerbahn in popular parlance) in 1891 was also conducive to the upswing around 1900 . This connected the city of Salzburg and the Flachgau with the Upper Austrian Salzkammergut and served to transport people and goods until it was closed in 1957.

The decisive factor for the significant economic growth of the last decades was the construction of the Westautobahn (A1) after 1955, when Eugendorf was equipped with its own exit. As a result, a number of larger companies settled. Later on, the commercial and industrial areas knot-straße, Gewerbestraße and Nordstraße were created. Several furniture stores with a spacious catchment area are of particular economic importance. Building land was also designated, several new settlements were built and some schools were built, some renovated and expanded. In addition, the community built two kindergartens, an old people's house and a sports field.

In the course of the 1250th anniversary in 1987, Eugendorf was declared a market town .

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality is: "In green in the base of the shield, a silver slanted left bar, lined with silver above and below, raised by a silver goat head with a neck piece."

The “oblique left bar” shown in the coat of arms stands for the Roman road, which played an important role for Eugendorf from an early age and the ibex was the heraldic animal of the knights of Kalham.

Culture and sights

traffic

  • Public transport: Eugendorf has a large proportion of commuters and a correspondingly high volume of traffic, due to its proximity to the state capital on the one hand and its importance as a business location, so that public transport is of great importance. The place is connected to the regional rail network with the Salzburg S-Bahn (line S2). Also important are the post buses , which run at very short intervals, mainly at peak times . More than 70 buses run to and from Salzburg per day and direction, transporting around 20% of commuters.
  • Individual traffic: Eugendorf is also an important and heavily frequented hub for traffic to the surrounding communities due to its location and its connection to the Westautobahn. The place is on the busy Wiener Straße (B1), the former federal highway 1.
