A reclining stone slab with the image of a Celtic lady in Noric-Roman costume, which is attached to the south-east wall of the church, points to the long tradition of settlement on the Kirchberg .

At the site of the St. George branch church there used to be a castle that belonged to the stone churches. Konrad von Steinkirchen established the property of his daughter here in 1255, who was to marry Konrad von Kalham . The Steinkirchener and Kalhamers also built the Wartenfels Castle in this area . In 1254 Konrad von Steinkirchen pledged the Seekirchen bailiwick to Richker, the abbot of St. Peter . In 1275 he was mentioned again in front of the besieged Kalham Castle as a witness to an atonement from Ulrich von Kalham. The so-called Mesnergütl , which belonged to the Seekirchen collegiate monastery and was replaced by a new building in 1970 (archaeological finds were not secured at the time), probably belonged to the castle .

The Steinkirchener built a chapel here, which was expanded by the Seekirchen pastor Ulrich around 1390; at its core this was still a Romanesque chapel. Around 1500 the chapel was converted into a single-nave Gothic church with ribbed vaults . It developed into a pilgrimage church for St. Georg , as the existing votive tablets show. The church tower dates from 1698/99 - in those years the nave was also given a new flat ceiling. In 1707, the Mondsee baroque sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler created the high altar with St. George in the central niche; on either side are the statues of St. Florian and St. Leopold . The high altar was a 1740 Rococo - Tabernacle added. The altarpiece shows St. Laurentius standing with a palm branch and grate and in the background the martyrdom of the saint. The altarpiece on the side altar is a pilgrimage image of Mary. In addition to the pulpit with crucifix and the fourteen Stations of the Cross, the six rectangular paintings on the parapet of the west gallery should be mentioned, depicting the life and martyrdom of St. George (1641).

After a fire in 1917, a neo-Gothic spire was put on again instead of the onion dome. In 1980 the church was thoroughly renovated.

Immediately next to the church is the grave of the entrepreneur Kommerzialrat Max Reischl, who lived next to the church; This is also where the Max Reischl Private Foundation is based. A Georgiritt to the Georgskirche and a Kranzlstechen still take place today .
