history
On the Gmain is a name that has been used for centuries for the settlement area between Untersberg and Lattengebirge , Hallthurm and Kirchholz . Already the people of the Bronze Age knew the richness of the soil and the favorable location of the area to appreciate and settled here laid down, as well as thousands of years later, the Counts of Plain , which the area of Gmain with the erection of the Plainburg the center of their upper county made . Regardless of the rulers' borders, which divided the widely scattered farms into a Bavarian and a Salzburg half after the fall of Plain rule before 1300, the village community was always understood by the population as a unit.
In the fulfillment of religious life, the canonical unit formed a community-building basis for all Gmainers. For the economic structure, cultural life in general and school education in particular, the state border along the Weißbach only played a tax role. The diverse family ties across the border naturally formed a strong link. The only thing separating was the Salzburg and Bavarian jurisdiction that ended at the Weißbach, which established the different sovereignty .
However, the state separation only gained real importance from 1816, when, after a short period of unification of the two districts under Bavarian administration, the political differences in the 19th century became more and more important. According to the Treaty of April 14, 1816 between Bavaria and Austria ( Treaty of Munich ), the Reichenhall area remained with the Kingdom of Bavaria , while the Salzburg area was largely annexed to the Austrian Empire . Despite the formation of two independent communities, the feeling of togetherness remained. The same economic interests, especially in tourism, contributed just as much as the usefulness of common technical facilities.
Since the Großgmain volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1889, the traditional Florian Festival has been celebrated together with the Bayerisch Gmain volunteer fire brigade . In 2005 the 100th joint Florianifest of the fire brigades was celebrated. There were frequent interruptions during the First and Second World Wars, but the fire departments of the two communities did not allow themselves to be diverted from their tradition.
