Marienbrunnen Großgmain

The Marienbrunnen Großgmain stands on the church square on Salzburgerstrasse in the municipality of Großgmain in the Salzburg-Umgebung district in the state of Salzburg . The double baroque fountain figure of Maria lactans is an earlier widespread depiction of the mother of Jesus as the breastfeeding Theotokos , and therefore unique . The fountain is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

The fountain was built in 1646 and in 1693 received the central double figure Maria lactans by the sculptor Johann Schwaiger (1657–1734) from Reichenhall .

description

The hexagonal fountain with two steps is made of marble with relief decorations and has a wrought iron top. The double figure of the crescent moon Madonna with a wreath of stars pours water from both sides of the breasts.
