Lactatio

Lactatio of St. Bernhard, picture Bible, unknown source

The term lactatio describes, on the one hand, the secretion of milk from the female breast (see lactation ). In connection with Christian visions of Mary, best known with the Cistercian Bernhard von Clairvaux , it refers to the miracle of the nourishment of the saint from the breast of the Madonna ( Maria lactans ). Legends about lactation visions also concern the healing of illnesses through the milk of Mary or the special distinction of a saint through the process of lactation. Lactatio visions have been reported by both men and women and appeared on a larger scale from around the 12th century.
