history
- Origin of name
The origin of the name - first mentioned ad crethica [ecllesia] ( Notitia Arnonis 790) - there are two common options: Friulian cret means "the rock", Italian crett means "the crack, the crevice, the crevice" (connection with the Untersberg and its Mining is close); the name should therefore date back to the Roman times of Iuvavum .
- St. Leonhard: The church is dedicated to St. Leonhard of Limoges (patron saint of animals). (According to Koch-Sternfeld, the original names for "the quiet valley of St. Leonhard" were Tuval and Grafengaden .)
- Eichet: Oak forests in the Glan moor, the farmers had to give up acorns as fiefs in the Middle Ages, the name is more common in the neighborhood (e.g. Eichet near Loig )
- Glanegg: After the Glan , Celtic glann "water", egg "pure" (but here there can also only be a reference to Glanegg Castle, egg "corner, rock, landmark" or reinterpretation)
- Fürstenbrunn: Prince archbishops got their water from the well in this district
- Early history
- Stone Age: No finds except for a few spearheads; no signs of settlement
- Bronze Age: First large settlement in the south of Grödig, burial mounds near the cemetery: these were explored in 1941 and 1953. Weapons, vessels and jewelry were found.
- Iron Age: No finds; Relocation of the settlement area towards Hallein due to salt mining
- Roman times: Grödig particularly important due to the Untersberg marble . Finds: graves, coins, weapons, Roman stone in the cemetery wall (erected in 202 AD).
- 482: Death of St. Severin , invasions of the Baiuwaren , evacuation of the Roman citizens by Odoacer , but many residents stayed in Grödig. The graves from this time no longer had grave goods.
- 6th and 7th centuries: Grödig becomes important for the Baiuwaren (2nd sound shift: This was only implemented in areas with a high number of Baiuwaren, see Adnet , Kuchl )
- Local history
- 790: First documented mention in the Notitia Arnonis . In this document, Bishop Arno lists the possessions of the Salzburg Church . Grödig is listed under ad crethica ecllesia cum territorio .
- Middle Ages: Little known. Grödig was subordinated to the Abbey of St. Peter and administered by it.
- 1136: Tunnel through the Mönchsberg, start of work on the Almkanal , which was supposed to supply water for the city of Salzburg, under Master Albert
- 1143: Completion of the first section of the Alm Canal
- 1150: Grödig becomes a parish
- 1260: the piercing stretch from Grödig to the Almkanal
- 1525: Peasant uprisings : Although some peasants formed, the uprisings in Grödig went largely unnoticed.
- 1645: The Glanegg Castle was rebuilt under Archbishop Marcus Sitticus
- 1809: Father Joachim Haspinger (next to Andreas Hofer leader of the peasant uprisings in Tyrol) penetrates to Grödig. In the neighboring town, however, Bavarian troops are forming, and the peasants withdraw
- 1848: A parish becomes Grödig
- 1869: The Almkanal serves as a source of energy for many businesses and factories: 13 companies
- 1886: Opening of the Salzburg – Hangender Stein local railway , which was initially operated as a steam tram and initially ended at the St. Leonhard-Drachenloch station. Other stops in the municipality were Grödig and St. Leonhard-Gartenau. Later the line was electrified and mostly referred to as the Red Electric . It was also extended to Berchtesgaden.
- 1907/08: Further construction to Hangender Stein , the following year it was linked to the Berchtesgaden – Hangender Stein local railway , the so-called Green Electricity
- First World War: One of the largest POW camps in Austria-Hungary is being built in Grödig, around 40,000 (mostly Russian) prisoners. Today the Russian cemetery commemorates the camp.
- Interwar period: emergency money; since the state put too much paper money into circulation, many people hoarded their coins. To remedy this shortcoming, many churches got "their own money".
- Nazi regime and World War II: November 17, 1944 Bomb attack: 65 people killed
- 1953: The tram was finally shut down and the station was demolished
- 1959–1961 Construction of the Untersbergbahn , a technical masterpiece at the time
