history

The etymology of the place name is unclear, and is derived either from Old High German  leug 'warm bath', Latin lucus 'forest, valley, swamp', or a Romanic distance designation to the main town Iuvavum . The Romanesque settlement is in any case secured by means of a villa rustica ( Roman Villa Loig east near Himmelreich, excavations 1815, Theseus mosaic from the 3rd century AD), to which the attempts at explanation can refer , in addition to moor settlement . Settlement continuity up to the Bavarian settlement can be assumed - given the nearby whale ( Welsche , 'Romanen').

The decisive event in local history is the battle of the Walserfeld 12-14th centuries . December 1800 in the First Napoleonic War against the advancing French, when the main battle line ran right here.

After the local congregations were founded in 1948/49, the small homestead belonged to the community of Himmelreich in the Siezenheim community , and later to the Wals community. Since 1948 the Walser part has belonged to the common municipality of Wals-Siezenheim. Today Loig is partly part of the Kingdom of Heaven, partly part of Viehhausen, the Salzburg part is considered independent.

With the growth of Salzburg Airport, its buildings have moved directly to the site in recent years. Nevertheless, the place is still known for its directly marketed agricultural products ( Walser vegetable country , pleasure region ), which is already documented from 1576. The grassland is protected as part of the Salzburg green belt .

In 1987 the Schnalzerkapelle for St. Isidore was built here by the local Aperschnalzer Association , which cultivated the local culture of ritual cracking of the whip.

Individual evidence

  1. such as Leukerbad
  2. older interpretation, for example based on Benedikt Pillwein: Der Salzburgerkreis . Volume 5 of the history, geography and statistics of the Archduchy of Austria ob der Enns and the Duchy of Salzburg , Quandt Verlag, 1843, p. 363 ( Google eBook, full view ).
  3. The official coordinate for the Kingdom of Heaven is not in its current center, but with Loig; the district of the municipality of Wals is specified and counted in the OVZ 2001 for the village of Himmelreich (Occ. 13942). In the current implementation on SAGIS , it belongs to the village of Viehhausen. In the modern urban structure of Salzburg, the place name Himmelreich no longer plays a role.
