The Kapuzinerberg is a city mountain in Salzburg ( Austria ), which rises east of the Salzach , i.e. opposite the Mönchsberg , Rainberg and Festungsberg and its fortress Hohensalzburg . The highest point of the mountain is at 636  m above sea level. A. , it rises about 200 meters above city level. The former name of the Kapuzinerberg was Imberg , which today primarily designates its foothill on the city side.

Cultural history

On the Kapuzinerberg there is a Capuchin monastery , which was built in 1599–1605 from a converted medieval fortification (Trompeterschlösschen). On the way from Linzergasse to the monastery there are 11 Kalvarienberg chapels and two other chapels, which were built between 1736 and 1744, initiated in the Franciscan spirit by the Capuchins. Here, not far from the monastery, is the fortified tower of the Felixpforte, a memorial for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the old Paschingerschlössl , known as Stefan Zweig's former home .

The Hettwerbastei in the west secured the space above the old stone gate, three high defense platforms - the Große Linzertor Kavalier , the small Linzertor Kavalier and the two Gnigler Kavaliers in the north and northeast secured the space above Linzer Straße and above the Gnigl valley. Today the cavaliers are important viewing points. The long defensive walls placed on scarred rocks with their guard houses ("Auslug") in the south and south-east of the mountain secured the mountain above Steingasse. Most of the fortifications are well preserved. On the top of the mountain is the pretty Franziskischlössl , accessible via a drawbridge , which is now used as a small inn. These defensive structures (with the exception of the short defensive wall at the Franziskustor next to Linzergasse, which was built in the late 13th century) all date from the time of Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron and the Thirty Years' War .

Nature and relaxation

The Kapuzinerberg can be reached via the Imbergstiege from Steingasse, from the Franziskuspforte in Linzergasse or from a footpath behind the “Im Berg” shopping center in Fürbergstrasse. The mountain offers visitors delightful walks along the many hiking trails, especially along the "Basteiweg", which runs next to the fortification walls in the south and east of the mountain. It begins at the Hettwer Bastion below the Capuchin monastery and ends at the Franziskischlössl. The various viewpoints of Salzburg's old town are also noteworthy . With its wooded areas, the mountain is also a “green lung” of Salzburg.

Biological peculiarities of the mountain are various rare alpine plants and animals in the cold inaccessible northern rocks (such as alpine auricles and alpine rose ). The common raven also breeds in the rugged limestone cliffs.

The mountain has been designated as a Kapuzinerberg landscape protection area since 1973 .
