geography

The Berchtesgadener Land biosphere reserve is located in the Berchtesgaden Alps around Berchtesgaden and thus in the extreme southeastern part of the German state of Bavaria on the border with Austria (the state of Salzburg there ). The core zone of this reserve is the 210 km² Berchtesgaden National Park in its southern part .

Its predecessor, the Berchtesgaden Biosphere Reserve , was limited to Berchtesgaden and the communities of Bischofswiesen , Ramsau , Schönau and Marktschellenberg as well as parts of the city of Bad Reichenhall and the communities of Bayerisch Gmain and Schneizlreuth . The municipalities of Laufen , Saaldorf-Surheim , Teisendorf , Freilassing , Ainring , Anger and Piding were added in 2010 for the extension to the Berchtesgadener Land biosphere reserve .

Since then, the course of the biosphere reserve boundary has been identical to the boundaries of the Berchtesgadener Land district , which extends into the Austrian state of Salzburg in the shape of a peninsula.

Zones of the biosphere reserve

The core (139 km²) and maintenance or buffer zone (69 km²) of the Berchtesgaden Biosphere Reserve are congruent with that of the Berchtesgaden National Park, the development zone of the reserve (632 km²) is just as large as the northern apron of the National Park.

history

The Berchtesgadener Land Biosphere Reserve began as the Berchtesgaden Biosphere Reserve or Berchtesgaden Alpine Park , which the Bavarian State Government established on May 7, 1974 with the geography and the three zones (the Berchtesgaden National Park, which was formed from the Königssee nature reserve as the core zone, as well as a development area - and a recreation zone) was decided to be the same as the current biosphere reserve. On July 18, 1978, after further preparation and lengthy consultation in the Bavarian state parliament, the state government issued the ordinance on the Berchtesgaden Alpine Park as well as on the Berchtesgaden National Park included therein. In addition to Berchtesgaden, the Berchtesgaden biosphere reserve already included the communities of Bischofswiesen , Ramsau , Schönau and Marktschellenberg as well as parts of the city of Bad Reichenhall and the communities of Bayerisch Gmain and Schneizlreuth .

After the award of the title, the Berchtesgaden Biosphere Reserve was largely rejected by the population and regional politicians. It was only after the local elections in 2002 that the project began to move again due to the assurance that there were no restrictions associated with the reserve and that large amounts of funding would flow. Eventually a development association was founded and the reserve was filled with life.

The plans to further expand the sponsoring association and the reserve were implemented in June 2010. The biosphere reserve was expanded to the north to 840 km² and has since encompassed the entire district of Berchtesgadener Land . The municipalities of Laufen , Saaldorf-Surheim , Teisendorf , Freilassing , Ainring , Anger and Piding have been added . Since then, the name of the reserve has been Berchtesgadener Land Biosphere Reserve .
