The Hamburg Wadden Sea Biosphere Reserve between the Elbe and Weser estuaries is Germany's smallest biosphere reserve. It was recognized as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1992 as part of its "man and biosphere" (MAB) program and corresponds to the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park in terms of area and protection goals .

As part of the biosphere reserve, sustainable human management in harmony with nature is promoted and tested and the following goals are pursued:

  • Conservation of biodiversity
  • Promotion of sustainable uses
  • Protect the historical cultural landscape
