The "Lower Saxon Elbe Valley" biosphere reserve is a biosphere reserve in the German state of Lower Saxony , which includes the meadow landscape of the Elbe in its lower central reaches. The Middle Elbe biosphere reserve connects to the Elbe valley floodplain and has also been part of the Elbe river landscape biosphere reserve recognized by UNESCO since 1997 .

history

In 1997 the transnational UNESCO biosphere reserve Elbe River Landscape was recognized. The national park established by ordinance in spring 1998 in part of Lower Saxony's UNESCO biosphere reserve was declared null and void by the OVG Lüneburg in late summer 1999. Instead, a biosphere reserve was established. For the first time in Germany, this protection status was implemented on the basis of Section 25 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG). On November 23, 2002, the law on the "Lower Saxony Elbe Valley" biosphere reserve came into force after it had been unanimously passed by the Lower Saxony state parliament.

description

The administration of the biosphere reserve "Lower Saxony Elbe Valley" is carried out by the Biosphere Reserve Administration of Lower Saxony Elbe Valley, which was initially a branch of the Lüneburg district government, which has since been dissolved , and is based in Hitzacker . Today the administration is directly subordinate to the Lower Saxony Ministry for Environment, Energy and Climate Protection . The biosphere reserve administration looks after the protection, maintenance and development of nature and landscape in close cooperation with the municipalities, other specialist administrations and interest groups as well as the population in the region. In the comparatively strictly protected area C, it also performs the function of a lower nature conservation authority. The Biosphere Reserve Advisory Board with representatives from all municipalities and active interest groups supports the administration. The Elbschloss Bleckede , the information center for the Elbe Valley, provides area-related information and educational work.

ecology

The biosphere reserve is characterized by a largely original river landscape with distinctive, relatively large flood plains. By maintaining the near-natural river dynamics , typical landscape features such as wet meadows , old river arms and alluvial forests have been able to exist as defining elements to this day.

According to the biosphere administration, around 250 bird species are found in the area. 1300 vascular plant species were identified. More noteworthy than the pure number of species is the diversity of landscape elements from sometimes opposing habitats. Together with the favorable location in the transition area from the Atlantic to the continental climate , the diverse habitat structure promotes biodiversity.
