development

In Baden-Württemberg there was no biosphere reserve and no national park until 2008 . In 2008, the Swabian Alb biosphere area was created in the vicinity of the former Münsingen military training area. The state of Baden-Württemberg calls biosphere reserves biosphere areas . After the establishment of the Black Forest National Park in the Northern Black Forest in 2014, a sub-area between Schauinsland , Feldberg and Belchen , Schluchsee and Wiesental was designated as a biosphere area within the existing Southern Black Forest Nature Park . On January 4, 2016, the ordinance for the new Black Forest biosphere area was signed by Nature Conservation Minister Alexander Bonde (Greens) in Bernau . After the ordinance was published in the Baden-Württemberg gazette, the biosphere area was set up on February 1, 2016. In June 2016, forest manager Walter Kemkes, previously head of the Bliesgau biosphere reserve , became the first managing director of the Black Forest biosphere area.

The participation processes for citizens and associations started in June 2016.

Recognition by UNESCO

The application for recognition by UNESCO for the Black Forest biosphere area was completed in early August 2016. In June 2017, UNESCO announced that it would recognize the southern Black Forest as a biosphere reserve.
