coat of arms
Since 1898, the municipality has had the coat of arms designed by the General State Archives in Karlsruhe in its seal. The blazon of the arms is ". In split sign in front of the Austrian arms, back in blue a rising Golden Stag" These symbols recall the front Austrian national rule and the basic rule of the monastery Saint Blasien . Since the 14th century, different forms of coats of arms with the Austrian shield and an abbot's staff have been handed down.

The town of Schönau has had a partnership with Villersexel in the Haute-Saône department in France since 1974.
Attractions in and around town
- Central town square
with the beautiful facade of the town hall and the dominant building of the catholic town church
- Old court linden tree
The old judicial linden tree is an inconspicuous summer linden tree , designated as a natural monument , with tiered branches. It stands in Talstrasse on the former court square next to the church and is surrounded by a surrounding bench. Their age is given as around 400 years. According to the sign attached, the last death sentence was imposed on October 18, 1737.
- Local history museum Klösterle
The building, which was probably built around 1780, was originally a tannery . After that, it was used by the school sisters of the order “ Sisters of Charity of the Holy Cross ” as an apartment - hence the name Klösterle. After extensive renovation work, the monument has housed the local museum of local history since 1988.
- The Belchen
At 1414 meters, the Belchen is the fourth highest elevation in the Black Forest and is known as the “Panorama Mountain of the Black Forest”. Due to its proximity to Schönau, it is a popular destination. Its treeless hilltop was closed to car traffic and can now be reached by a gondola cable car. A bus line was set up from Schönau to the valley station.

Schönau is linked to the national road network by the federal highway 317 ( Weil am Rhein - Titisee-Neustadt ). From 1889 to 1966, the city was connected to the national rail network by the Zell im Wiesental – Todtnau railway, a narrow-gauge railway. Via Herrenschwand you can reach the Weißenbachsattel and thus Todtmoos in the neighboring district of Waldshut via a narrow pass road .
Established businesses
The manufacture of brushes has a long tradition in Schönau. In the immediate vicinity of the location of the leading brush machine manufacturers Boucherie / Ebser / Zahoransky in Todtnau, a brush industry had already developed in Schönau in the 19th century. Today two companies manufacture brushes in Schönau:
- Sunstar Interbros GmbH, an indirect subsidiary of the Japanese Sunstar Inc .: toothbrushes and interdental brushes through the parent company Sunstar Suisse
- Frank Bürsten GmbH: shoe brushes and technical brushes.
Schönau became known throughout Germany for his "current rebels" in the 1980s. The citizens' initiative began to get involved in energy policy after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster . In July 1997, for the first time in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany, a group of citizens (and others) took over the power supply for the community by buying the network from the then energy supplier Kraftwerke Rheinfelden. Today the electricity network is operated by Elektrizitätswerke Schönau (EWS).
The locally based companies joined forces in 2002 to form an initiative group Oberes Wiesental (IOW) in order to jointly make the infrastructure of the Oberes Wiesental attractive for both the local companies and the people living here.
