history

Local history

The place was founded in the time of the Alemannic conquest in the 3rd and 4th centuries. The first documentary mention was made in 772 as Fiscinga . The place name probably goes back to a personal name. In the 8th and 9th centuries, the place was mentioned several times in documents from the St. Gallen Monastery , which were also owned by the local Dinghof and the church set . The chairmen are unknown. It is not known when the rights passed to the Lords of Rötteln ; the first evidence goes back to the year 1291.

The population remained constant at the beginning of the 19th century with just under 300 inhabitants until the 1820s and rose by about a third to 390 in 1845 by the middle of the century. Until the end of the century the population steadily decreased and only rose to over 300 inhabitants again after the end of the Second World War . It was not until the development of new building areas that the population rose again in the 1970s.

Site and buildings

Fischingen in the Markgräflerland
Evangelical Church Fischingen

Fischingen is a typical Wegedorf . Individual, spatially separated settlement areas can be seen and a more densely built-up settlement core, which today also forms the center of the village in the area of the church and the Vogtshaus. In the 1960s, the settlement area expanded further west. On the southern outskirts, the Riedmatten development area developed in the 2000s .

One of the sights is the Fischingen Evangelical Church from the 8th century. It contains frescoes with biblical scenes from the 14th century. The Fischingen town hall stands next to the church. The gabled house, which formerly served as a school building, is the seat next to the local administration. A few meters south of the church is the Vogtshaus from 1607. The two-storey building with a mighty hipped roof belonged to the Teutonic Order of Basel. Today the building is used as a residential building.

Educational institutions

Fischingen had its own primary school until 2017. Secondary schools or special schools are located in Weil am Rhein , Lörrach and Efringen-Kirchen . Since 1988 the Protestant parish has been using vacant school rooms as a kindergarten . The Citizens' Hall has been housed on the upper floor of the town hall since 1989.

Club life

Agricultural areas on the Läufelberg

Fischingen is a wine-growing community . Around 15% of the community area (28.5 hectares) is planted with vines. Above all, the Gutedel and Müller-Thurgau grape varieties are grown ; the wines are mainly marketed by the winegrowers' cooperative district winery Markgräflerland in Efringen-Kirchen.

In addition to viticulture, arable land is also used for agriculture and livestock is kept in Fischingen. Both were greatly reduced or made smaller in the middle of the 20th century. Pig farming has the greatest economic importance, with a decreasing tendency . Due to the favorable soil and climatic conditions, fruit and vegetables have been grown in special crops since the 1960s . For this purpose, summer and winter vegetables are grown on around 10 hectares of open land in wind-protected, south-western locations. Traditionally, orchards are widely grown . The fruit tree population increased from 2800 trees in 1933 to over 6000 in 1965, including around 2300 apple trees. The yields are offered at the weekly markets in Lörrach, Weil am Rhein and Schopfheim or at the fruit wholesale market in Efringen-Kirchen. On site, around 20 severance distilleries also process the products into Obstwasser.
