history

The earliest known documentary mention dates from 764. The place was then called Agimotingas (= among the members of Agimot). At that time Abbot Fulrad of the Abbey of Saint-Denis near Paris bought goods in Breisgau from a Franconian count, including some in Eimeldingen. In the further course of the story there is a multitude of place names as corruption of the original name Agimotingas (e.g. Eymatingen, Eymoltingen etc.) The sovereignty came to the noble free von Rötteln and from these to the margraves of Hachberg-Sausenberg . The lower jurisdiction had been in the possession of the Reich von Reichenstein since 1394 , which it sold to Margrave Wilhelm von Hachberg-Sausenberg in 1431 . By 1515 at the latest, the Margraves of Baden (heirs of the Hachberg-Sausenberg branch line) were the sole local lords with all rights of domination. The place belonged to the hamlet quarter of the Oberamt Rötteln . The largest landowner in Eimeldingen was the Heilig-Geist-Spital in Basel. The other landowners also included the Basel Coming of the Teutonic Knights and the Johanniter.
