Christian Streich (born June 11, 1965 in Weil am Rhein ) is a German soccer coach and former soccer player . He has been the head coach of SC Freiburg since January 2, 2012 .

Player career

Streich, the son of a butcher, grew up in Eimeldingen in southern Baden . He also started playing football at the local club, later moving to the nearby district town to FV Lörrach and finally in 1982 to Freiburg FC , whose first team had just been relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga . After a year in the youth of the FFC, he joined the first team in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg for the 1983/84 season . In his first season he was champion with the team, in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga , the club failed at FC 08 Homburg and VfR Bürstadt .

Step into professional football (1st and 2nd Bundesliga)

After another season at FFC, the midfielder moved to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1985 with the Stuttgarter Kickers . There he came to 21 missions in two seasons. In 1987 Streich returned to Freiburg, he was signed by the second division club SC Freiburg . Here he was trained by Jörg Berger and played a. a. with Jogi Löw and Souleymane Sané .

After one season he left the sports club and signed with FC 08 Homburg , who had just been relegated from the 1st Bundesliga to the 2nd league. Streich succeeded with his team after a season in the summer of 1989 as runner-up in the promotion to the 1st Bundesliga . In the Bundesliga season 1989/90 he came to ten missions for Homburg. At the end of the season he finished last with the club, which meant relegation to the second division.

Streich then decided to change clubs again, he returned to Freiburg in the summer of 1990 and signed with FC Freiburg, which played in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg. Streich ended his professional career; he stayed with Freiburg FC until 1994, where he was the top scorer in the 1991/92 season with 13 goals (top scorer in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg with 19 goals was Fredi Bobic from TSF Ditzingen ).

Coaching career

Beginnings

In 1995 Streich returned to SC Freiburg as a youth coach . With the A-Juniors he won the DFB-Juniors-Vereinspokal in 2006, 2009 and 2011 and in 2008 the German A-Youth Championship with a 2-0 final victory over VfL Wolfsburg . After Robin Dutt was signed as head coach of the professional team in the summer of 2007 , Streich was also an assistant coach , but still mainly looked after the A-youth. Under his leadership, some youth players made the leap to the pros, including Dennis Aogo , Jonathan Pitroipa , Daniel Schwaab , Eke Uzoma , Ömer Toprak and Oliver Baumann .

At the beginning of the 2011/12 season , Streich was assistant coach of the first team under the new coach Marcus Sorg , who succeeded the previous head coach Dutt, who had moved to Bayer Leverkusen.

On January 2, 2012, Streich took over the position of head coach as the successor to Marcus Sorg , who had been on leave after a weak first half (only three wins from 17 games) with the start of the second half of the preparation. The second half of the season was successful for the SC; the team left the relegation ranks and secured relegation on the 32nd matchday. Due to this surprising success and his unconventional remarks at press conferences, Streich received a lot of media attention. The local television station TV Südbaden dedicated a video column to him (prank of the week) , which the Badische Zeitung soon picked up.

Due to the fact that many observers no longer considered relegation possible and the overall good performance of SC Freiburg in the second half of the 2011/12 season, Streich took third place behind Jürgen Klopp and Lucien Favre in the 2012 coach of the year election . After SC Freiburg surprisingly took fifth place in the table in the following season 2012/13 and thus qualified for the Europa League , Streich achieved second place behind Jupp Heynckes in the election for coach of the year 2013 , ahead of Klopp.

On May 10, 2013, he extended his contract with SC Freiburg, which ran until 2014, on a long-term basis. His contract, which originally expired in July 2016, was renewed on February 19, 2016, as were the contracts of the entire coaching team.

After relegation from the Bundesliga in the 2014/15 season , Streich and his team secured direct promotion on the 32nd matchday after a 2-1 away win against SC Paderborn 07. On the 33rd matchday he won with the team a 2-0 win against 1. FC Heidenheim champions of the 2nd Bundesliga 2015/16 .

In the 2016/17 season , the club reached 7th place in the final table, which entitles them to participate in the third qualifying round for the Europa League. For this achievement, Streich was voted Man of the Year .

At the beginning of the 2017/18 season , SC Freiburg was eliminated in the Europa League qualification against NK Domžale . In the league they were in a relegation battle until the end, but could end the season in 15th place in the table, three points before relegation place.

Press conferences and political statements

Streich's press conferences regularly receive a lot of media attention. The coach often refers to the political events away from the pitch, regardless of Bundesliga games. In September 2015, before a game against Arminia Bielefeld , he commented on the refugee crisis : “Now the point is to open up to people, to receive them, to reduce fears. It is often about the fear of the other and the fear of the stranger. You can see that in yourself. It's about getting to know other ways of thinking. "

In December 2016 he briefly commented on the murder of a Freiburg student , which the Alternative für Deutschland took as an opportunity to criticize the German refugee policy : “I was told that a person from the AfD was the father of Maria, who was responsible for this terrible thing had to experience, called it pathological, because he supported refugees before this act. That someone in this country can belong to a party that is classified as democratic and can still mock someone who has had to experience something like that, you can see what's going on. "

After Roger Schmidt , coach of Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the time , was criticized for a verbal derailment, Streich defended him: "Why are we being presented in the most extreme situations and why all the people hear what slips us out in total tension?"

Between 2012 and 2014, the Badische Zeitung regularly published such statements as a compilation with the title “Streich der Woche”.

job

Streich, who successfully completed a vocational training as an industrial clerk at Fritz Düsseldorf GmbH at the age of 19, made up his Abitur at the age of 25 on the second educational path at the Kolping College in Freiburg and then completed a teaching degree in German , sport and history .
