Marco Rose (born September 11, 1976 in Leipzig ) is a former German soccer player and current coach . From 2017 to 2019 he was the head coach of the Austrian first division club FC Red Bull Salzburg , with whom he was twice Austrian champion. He has been the head coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach since the 2019/20 season .
Career as a player
The defender began his career at Rotation Leipzig and moved to 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig in 1987 , which became VfB Leipzig after the fall of the Berlin Wall and for which he played ten second division games. In 2000 Rose moved to Hannover 96 . Rose rose to the Bundesliga with Lower Saxony in 2002 , but initially switched back to the second Bundesliga on loan to 1. FSV Mainz 05 . In 2003 Rose was loaned out again by the Mainz team before they signed the left defender in 2004 after being promoted to the Bundesliga. In the second half of the 2004/05 season Rose lost his regular place to Benjamin Weigelt , but regained it a year later.
In 2010 he ended his professional career and played for the Mainz second team in the regional league until summer 2011 . For Mainz 05 he had played a total of 199 competitive games (first and second team) and scored seven goals, three of them in the First Bundesliga.
Career as a coach
From the 2010/11 season he acted as assistant coach and player in the second team of Mainz 05.
On June 1, 2012, he was hired as the new coach by 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig . He led the club in the 2012/13 season to stay in the Regionalliga Nordost . After the season he left Lok Leipzig prematurely.
In July 2013 he moved to FC Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, where he coached the U16s (youth B). After Thomas Letsch became coach of FC Liefering, Rose switched to the U18 as his successor. In his first year he was Austrian champion with the team. In April 2017 he won the UEFA Youth League with the U19 in the final against Benfica Lisbon 2-1.
In June 2017, he succeeded Óscar García as the head coach of the professionals at Red Bull Salzburg. In his first season Rose was Austrian champion , reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League and the final of the Austrian Cup , which was lost to SK Sturm Graz . In his second season with FC Red Bull Salzburg, Rose won the first 10 games in the league and thus set a new Bundesliga start record. Ultimately, the championship title was defended, which meant that the club was able to qualify directly for the group stage of the Champions League for the first time after failing to qualify for this competition eleven times in a row. In May 2019 Rose and the team also won the ÖFB Cup in the final against SK Rapid Wien 2-0.
Marco Rose's contract with Red Bull Salzburg would have run until June 2020, but he announced after the season that he wanted to leave the club. As head coach, he has not lost a single competitive game at home.
For the 2019/20 season , Rose took over the Bundesliga team from Borussia Mönchengladbach as the successor to Dieter Hecking and conducted his first team training session on June 30, 2019. His team ended his first Bundesliga season in fourth place and qualified for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League .
