Denis Lemi Zakaria Lako Lado (born November 20, 1996 in Geneva ) is a Swiss football player . His father is from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and his mother is Sudanese . He plays in defensive midfield and is a Swiss national player . He has been playing for the Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach since summer 2017 .

Club career

Servette FC

Denis Zakaria has made several youth selections with Servette FC . He made his debut in the first team on November 10, 2014 in the 15th round of the Challenge League , when he came on in the 90th minute of the game against FC Lausanne-Sport . On May 18, 2015, he scored the first goal of his professional career in the game against FC Wohlen .

BSC Young Boys

For the 2015/16 season Zakaria moved to BSC Young Boys , with whom he signed a four-year contract. On the first day of the match he made his debut in the first team when he was substituted on in the 1-1 home game against FC Zurich shortly before the end. Zakaria made his starting line-up debut on matchday five in the 0-1 defeat at FC Lugano , and from this game on he completed a large part of the rest of the season as a regular player. On July 28th, he played in his first international competitive match in qualifying for the Champions League against AS Monaco , which was lost 3-1. On November 28th, the 17th matchday, Zakaria scored his first goal in the Super League in a 2-1 home win against FC St. Gallen . In total, Denis Zakaria made 27 appearances and scored one goal in his first season in the Super League.

Zakaria also completed the following season 2016/17 as a regular player, but due to some injuries he only made 23 appearances in which he was able to score again.

Borussia Monchengladbach

For the 2017/18 season Zakaria switched to the Bundesliga for Borussia Mönchengladbach . On June 9, 2017, he signed a contract that runs until 2022. He was given the shirt number 8. There he made his competitive debut on August 11, 2017 in the first round of the DFB Cup 2017/18 in a 2-1 win against Rot-Weiss Essen ; Nine days later, he made his debut as a starting player on matchday 1 of the 2017/18 season in a 1-0 win against 1. FC Köln in the 1. Bundesliga. On the following match day on August 26, 2017, he scored his first competitive goal for Mönchengladbach in a 2-2 draw against FC Augsburg . He was a regular player throughout the season, mostly as a partner of Christoph Kramer in defensive midfield, and played 30 games, scoring two goals.

In the 2018/19 season , coach Dieter Hecking changed the system and usually only brought one defensive and two offensive midfielders. Zakaria alienated with this change and could not fully convince either as the sole defensive player or in one of the offensive positions. In the first half of the season (3rd place), which was very successful for Borussia, he often came off the bench. The second half of the season went much worse for the club, which is why Hecking made some tactical changes again, but Zakaria was now more consistent and was mostly on the field at kick-off. Overall, he even played one more game this season than the previous one, but had significantly fewer game minutes. He scored four goals.

In the season 2019/20 Borussia Moenchengladbach went with a new coach, Marco Rose . He built on Denis Zakaria from the start and almost always used him for over 90 minutes, only on the 10th Bundesliga matchday he was only substituted in the second half for reasons of stress control. On September 19, 2019, he also made his Europa League debut for Mönchengladbach in a 4-0 home defeat against Wolfsberger AC . Tactically, Borussia was now much more flexible and played with frequently changing formations. Zakaria convinced both in various midfield positions, as a central and even as a right defender in a three-way defense.

National team

On September 5, 2014 Zakaria made her debut against the Austrian U-19 national football team in the Swiss U-19 national team . A year later, on September 7, 2015, he made his first appearance in the Swiss U-21 team against the Kazakh U-21 team . Overall, Zakaria came to the U-19 and the U-21 to eight missions, with he scored three goals in the U-19.

He made his senior national team debut on May 28, 2016 in Geneva when he lost 2-1 in the friendly against Belgium , replacing Blerim Džemaili in the 79th minute.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Swiss squad. He was one of several players in the squad who were not used in the tournament.

Zakaria made his starting line-up debut in the first leg of the qualifying playoffs for the 2018 World Cup on November 9, 2017 in Northern Ireland , which Switzerland won 1-0. In the second leg, a 0-0 qualification for the tournament, Zakaria played over 90 minutes in both games. At the World Cup in Russia he was then part of the Swiss squad . He came to two missions as a substitute and was eliminated with the team in the round of 16 by a 0-1 defeat against Sweden.

Since then, Zakaria has been a regular in the national team, so he was part of the starting eleven in all eight Swiss games in the successful qualification for the 2020 European Football Championship . He scored his first goal in a 6-0 win over Iceland on September 8, 2018 in the UEFA Nations League .
